    You would think there would be some sort of engineering equation that can take material grade and dimensions coupled with fastening type and get a rough estimate.

    It might not have been intended to be a test to failure, but it was a test article, and failure is always an option, hence the tests in the first place. The fear mongering "news" is just doing what they can to attract clicks.

    Now all that said, evidence points to it not have being an intended failure, like vehicles and other removable equipment in the area. But that's my armchair engineering there. LN2 might not be that damaging, except to a terminator.

    Engineers over design by large margins because real materials are not perfectly consistent and neither is construction. Knowing the failure specs of one tank won’t necessarily tell you those of another but can tell you if your calcs were grossly off.
