    Hey all:

I noticed a my exhaust note got louder! Shop tells me I have a hole in the top of my muffler.

OEM is the entire assembly. Something like $500 bucks Canadian.

I don't need a loud truck. It's not a sports car and I don't want to listen to droning exhaust on my long trips.

Firstly, I'm surprised it rusted out already (85K miles on the truck).

Secondly, is going with the OEM pipes replacement the best option? Seems like a lot of coin to me.

    Cheers,

    Live in salt country?

    If yes, not surprised.

If yes, and you dont treat the frame annually, you should be poking and prodding it in many places.

I would personally skip the dealer and take it to a competent local muffler shop and get a new muffler welded on! Are you saying the piping is toast too and has to be replaced? Either way, I would still find a local muffler shop to do this vs the dealer.

Second this..gotta be an option for a shop to weld a new muffler on. $500 could be a whole new catback.

It's an independent shop. And they want to do catback.

Suggest to run a Stainless Steel system if you do a CAT back install.

    Otherwise, just replace the muffler.

Muffler shop would be your best bet for an affordable install.

I picked up a used exhaust for $100 when I had our 2nd Gen - I would keep an eye out locally for take-offs.
Have you checked the factory price from Toyota? might give you a better idea if $500 catback is a deal or not.

Any shop is going to be able to bolt up a cat back, exhaust shop is nice because they can build you something usually cheaper..

Where is Canada are you, I was at an autowrecker this morning and there was a 3rd gen DCSB box and frame with the back half of the exhaust on it still. There is also a newer one on Craigslist. I am sure you could find one for a reasonable deal with some searching.

Toyota genuine exhaust system is around ~$300-$350? Get one and replace it yourself. Or go to a muffler shop and get a muffler welded on your current one.

When i trailered snowmobiles to quebec it took a toll on my tundra muffler with 10 hrs of steady driving. Wasn't long after doing those trips i noticed the exhaust a little louder. Upon inspection i noticed the muffler very brown with the metal surface in that area very thin. About a year later i had a hole big enough to place 2 fists into it. I ended up buying a complete flowmaster dual system including the cats. Imo, it was a nice improvement at a more than fair price vs others like magnaflow. It lasted about 10 years before selling the truck.
I guess you can buy a walker exhaust similar like toyota would sell. Try Rock Auto.
