I bet I've spent more time doing maint. to front diff. than travelling in 4WD over the years.

edit: just an observation. I enjoyed not getting stuck a few times.

I never owned a true 4x4 until I picked up this 2021 Tacoma. Not sure where AWD stands in the mix with the
    wife's Forester, ..

I'm happy to have it for sure.

Serious off-roading no, iffy places where I'll be glad I got it yea...

It's been a long time since I had a new anything for myself, and I sure feel confident when i drive this
thing, asteroid heading out way?.... tsunami on the horizon?.... all out nuclear war?.... just hitch up my
teardrop and a few jerry-cans of fuel, lots of water and my solar - stuff and I'm ready to ride it out. Guess
a roll of T.P. would be in order and 1 change of sox LOL...

Please tell me we have not degenerated to the point of talking about condoms, wiping butts with something called “Dude Wipes” and 2 wheel drive trucks? What are we, a bunch of hipsters? Get hold of yourselves!

For on road/foul weather/snow driving, at least, tires make a gigantic difference. I run snow tires on both of my 'all season' vehicles (the other is a Subaru Ascent) in the midwest (Iowa/Illinois). The truck in 2WD does well until it gets deep or the incline gets big. If it had a 2WD locker and weight in the back it would probably be enough around here - we frequent Colorado to ski during winter and I wanted a stick so OR 4x4 fit all those two needs.

Been told by several with AWD that this system eats tires much sooner than 4wd vehicles.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
    4WD is like a gun.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Yes it does, SHAWD on my Acura RL, eats rubber. I also drive it like a rented mule, which apparently doesnt help.

Wife's 2017 Subaru has about 38,000 miles on it.
OEM tire tread is fine probably could get another 25,000 out of them easy but they
are 5 years old. Phoenix heat degrades everything out here so I'm looking to replace
    them late spring.

Unless you're doing burnouts at every light, I can't see the type of drive making a massive difference.

That sounds like a good time! I went to an open parking lot in the evening after a snow fall and got to do my first ones!

Pretty much. Also, like a gun, you can't have too many, and there are soooo many aftermarket parts for it. You always want a new one too, 'cause your friend got a new one... or you just saw a cool video on one and now you need it. Your wife doesn't understand your obsession with it and why you spend so much time on the range. Then, there are always the people who want to take them away because a regular person shouldn't have one or has no real need for one, you should rely on the government for your transportation needs, et. al.. Then, they want safety features and background checks, some crazy license scheme, or "green" power. You always get that disapproving, "stink-eye", look from those who are anti-truck too. You know the type... drives a Prius, shops at Whole Foods. I digress though...
