Anybody have 285/75/17s? Basically a 33 and I need to know what backspacing works best?

Missed the 2g part. Should be about the same but your 3" lift will be the same as a 2" lift on the 3g.

There's some 2g posts in there though.

Every truck is slightly different (due to alignment specs)
So 3rd gen, 2nd gen… doesn’t matter. Similar problems of rubbing the UCA with not enough backspacing and rubbing everything else with too much.

    OP 10” wheels are wiiiiide
Wider than what most are running, most around here are using an 8-9” wheel… so the majority of specs/recommendations aren’t going to work for you imo

Find a normal sized wheel is my advice lol

    Get ready to :sawzall:

It doesn't matter how much you lift the truck since a suspension lift doesn't change the size of the wheel wells.

I'm running 285/75/16 on 16x8 with 4.5" backspace and 0 offset. Even after cutting the cab mount, hammering the pinch weld flat, cutting the plastic fender flare and fender liner, and getting the alignment dialed I still rub when the suspension bottoms out.

17x10 is an odd size for a tacoma, what wheels?

    Also this.

lift doesn’t matter unless you plan on never articulating the suspension.

I have a set of 17x10 bullet holes already and was going to try and use those. Maybe I’m going to be in the market for a set of wheels more suited for the truck cause I definitely don’t want to have to cut it up so much the truck is like new.

You’re gunna be cutting wether you like it or not lol

unless you stick to a smaller tire.
Look into 265/70/17 if you want to avoid headache.
I run 285/75/17s but I also wheel my truck. The tires get stuffed into the wheel wells and I’m cutting off pieces of my plastic bumper/fenders with dykes and dremmels on the trail because without articulating the suspension YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHERE YOU RUB and no one can answer that for you. Educated guesses still valid lol

If you’re just driving around town, or hitting forest service roads (and calling that “wheeling” lol) then it’s a different story.

I still recommend a smaller tire.

You dont wanna be doing something one day, years down the road, and hit a bump/cycle the suspension and pop a fender flare off. 285/75/17 is going to be too much tire if you dont wanna trim, hammer and grind away.

On my truck, Id say the trimming is minor, easy and isnt a big deal at all. most people couldnt even tell what/where ive cut and welded... but thats a relative statement. Minor to me may be excessive to others... and i completely understand the idea of not wanting to "cut up" a nice truck (although i may disagree lol)

With your desired use a 285/70/17 would be the biggest tire i would consider putting on. Typically the only fitment issues with that size are little pieces of plastic in the corners and a metal body mount that most people chop up. If you dont mind a little rubbing here and there (like when you turn full lock, and go in reverse, uphill) then you can get away without cutting anything so long as your alignment guy pushes the wheel forward (more caster) to keep it off the aforementioned body mount.

TLDR, these trucks suck sometimes and you cant really put anything bigger than a 32"x10.5" tire under there without trimming something

265/70/17 is still going to be my recommendation.

edit: that was without even going into wheel spec's which have alot to do with what rubs and where.

I FIFY because a 285/70/17 on 17x10 is going to rub considerably. Even on a 17x8.5 with appropriate backspacing and offset is going to rub to the point that it starts ripping things off his truck if he doesn't do some work to the front wheel wells.

ohh, them 10" wheels gotta GO lol

but, ive seen the "normal" setup (285's, zero-ish offset wheels, 2"-ish suspension/spacer lift) with not alot of rubbing at all. It does vary of course, but my truck when i bought it had a similar setup, it only rubbed a little on the frame in the typical rub-inducing scenarios(never even touched the cab mount on 285's). To me, thats unacceptable of course and i immediately "fixed" everything. But the previous owner of my truck just drove around town/to work and back and wanted it to look good. Ignorance is bliss for alot of people, sadly.

Anyways, fitting 33's isnt that much work if he's willing to do a little homework and see that its not that bad. Hopefully my comments steered him into the realm of researching the 285 fitment (or 255 or whatever, pick your poison), away from the 34x11.5's or into a 265.

Edit for photos. because we all like photos. but this was my truck the week i bought it, 285/75/16's, it had 1/4" wheel spacers to keep the tires off the frame (as mentioned before, it wasnt enough and still rubbed the frame rails). but 99.99% of the time drove just fine and most dudes would never know the atrocities being committed. 2" of lift DOES help in that regard, most people are never going to push the wheels into the wheel well enough to bottom out, let alone do it at a high enough speed to send shit flyin off their truck.
    upload_2022-1-19_17-13-19.jpg

TLDR: buy smaller tires op ...or start doing alot of homework and be prepared to cut the truck up a little.

I’m fine with trimming stuff I’m mostly wanting to stay away from moving the cab mount. And I don’t have to go with the 10” wheels I just already had them off my other truck. I’ll definitely be doing a lot more research before I do anything serious. Thanks for that reply it definitely helped

You shouldn't need to relocate the cab mount but you will need to chop it unless you don't mind rubbing.

This is what I cut on the cab mount to fit 285/75/16s on 16x8 with 0 offset.

And here's the difference between 285/75/16s and 265/75/16s

285/70/17, -12 offset 9" on a 3" lift. Rubs sometimes on full turn and in reverse backing in driveway.
I trimmed couple inches off bumper and melted in the plastic wheel well.
    No uca's yet, but 100% needs them.20211120_093508.jpg
