Today I got some new load E BFG 265/75/16 KO2s put on my truck, after changing them I noticed a significant power and MPG hit (at 14 mpg with feather foot on interstate). I was definitely expecting an impact but just not as much as I am seeing. MPG isn’t a huge concern of mine just the only real stat I have to present.

I currently have factory SR steelies on, which from what I read are around 30lbs per wheel. Was wondering how much dropping down to a 20lb wheel would help my power and MPG. If so any good recommendations for wheels? I have been looking at SCS.

I also read somewhere that lighter wheels on heavier tires might even cause more power loss, is there any truth to this or will lighter help in my scenario?

For sure a new Tune! That’s the best bang for the money.

Getting lighter rotational mass is very important. Roughly 10lbs of wheel mass equates to 100lbs of chassis weight. There are a few aftermarket aluminum wheel companies making wheels 22-25lbs.

Yeah I’ve read quite a bit about unsprung weight and it’s impact - seeing it first hand has been eye opening though.

Have any good wheel company recommendations?

Adding to the above, I’ve seen folx here say that adding that rotational mass further from the hub (as in the treads of the tire) makes it worse than closer in (wheel itself). Obviously you’re not gonna be getting. Anew set for a while now, but next time you might want to consider C loads to save some weight as well. Good luck!

For sure, main reason I went with E was for some reason, nobody makes C in 16 all terrains that I could find.

Oooh gotcha. I have heard that's an issue with 16s. Supposedly there are more C load options available for 17s, but if you're already gonna buy lighter 16s you may as well just stick with that. Hopefully lighter wheels will do the trick for you!

Enkei RPT1 16x8 are around 16-18lbs, and pretty affordable compared to other JDM wheels.
I know Volks are similar in weight with the same size, but the price is more.

I’m planning on running them with 265/75/16 SL load and I am hoping I will actually lose weight while increasing the tires size.

That’s weird your mpg is so low, my mpg with 285 70 17 KO2s C load currently running is around 18 mpg combined. We have a 60mph speed limit.

    When I went from 265 70 17 KO2s E load to C load I only gained 1 mpg so not a big difference.

Stock 2022 should have way better mpg than a 2nd Gen lifted with a canopy, winch. True I do have SCS wheels which are lighter but come on, you guys should be in the low 20s for mpg. Unless your doing 80 mph out there on your drive.

Yeah I should’ve mentioned, our speed limit is 70, so regularly do ~75 on the interstate. Before tires I was seeing 19-20 combined.

I actually ended up going back to DiscountTire and am getting some SL Goodyear ultraterrain ATs put on, they allowed me to exchange my tires since I had only put a few miles on them.

The ultraterrains looked pretty comparable to the Duratracks from what I have seen/read, they should be around ~12lb lighter per tire too which I assume will be a world of difference.

These look awesome but definitely on the pricier side of what I was hoping to spend. Hoping SCS will restock at some point.

Update on this, changed out for 265/75/r16 Goodyear Ultraterrain AT SL load, and the pep is back! The ~12lbs made a huge difference.

in the future I would like to try out KO2s again but will have to jump up to 17 inch wheels to get the C load.

Spot on. Larger rotational moment arm. I'm a big fan of C load tires for this very reason
