2022 Tacoma Trail Edition 4×4

I’m honestly not, seeing as the high trim OR which has more off roading features doesn’t have it either.

Plus the pro has to keep some exclusive features to make it feel special, otherwise the whole annoying “why didn’t you buy an SR and drop 20k in it to destroy a Pro” argument pops up even more

 

I really liked this take by Edmunds on the trail edition. I feel like it sums up why it's appearing to be popular, if you can get one for a reasonable price. The capability across the board on any Tacoma is awesome!

"...It feels like the Trail Edition is an SR5 that moved to Colorado and assimilated into the outdoors culture. The big deal here is that it features a locking rear differential, which when paired with Toyota's 4x4 system gives the driver the ability to go as far as most of us would even think to go. Why do I sound so confident? The Trail Edition Tacomas on our two-day journey managed to go everywhere the TRD Off-Roads and TRD Pros went, with absolutely zero issues. In fact, both of the early production Trail Editions on the drive had malfunctioning rear differential lockers, meaning I was actually unable to test the very feature that makes this trim so enticing for aspiring off-roaders. And yet they soldiered on, never missing a step or slowing the convoy down.


Off-road capabilities aside, the Trail Edition looks great aesthetically. This is an undervalued and very welcomed element of midsize trucks, where I personally feel the "cool-looking" ones are always the most expensive. The Trail Editions look like they've already been hit with a batch of tasteful mods before even leaving the factory. Bronze badging and TRD wheels adorn the Trail Editions, adding unique character touches that do a solid job at differentiating the truck from a general contractor's SR5 work truck. The cloth seats feature a bronze stitching that elevates the interior above lesser models. The bed features two storage lockers — one of which is insulated — that come standard and are exclusive to the Trail trims (for now).


Toyota nailed it with the Trail Edition for shoppers who want a capable, cool 4x4 on a budget. If my TRD Pro hunt doesn't pan out, I'll be getting into one of these."

 

No updates for me, but did want to ask about fog lights. I know the TEs do not come with fogs, but are they prewired for them? I'd like to install them but want the ability to turn them on and off regardless of if the headlights are on or off. Is there a preferred method for this sort of thing?

 

Better off just buying an aftermarket set, like Diode Dynamics/Rigid, and use their wiring harness/switch. There may be wires in there but there wont be a fog light switch on the blinker arm.

Aftermarket is better for the $ too. I've had Diode Dynamics SS3, Rigid Industries SAE. and OEM TRD Pro Rigids. both aftermarket had better output.

 

I would assume they aren't set up for plug and play. I was curious too, do those fog cover plates just pop out? I have seen in certain regions that you can get fogs put on at port/dealer on the Trail...can't remember where in the thread this was mentioned. So there are Toyota kits for this model and purpose.

 

I saw a video that shows they just pop out. It wasn't for the Trail, it was for an SR but I'd think they should be the same.

 

Not 100 percent sure but believe the OR does have the Multi Terrain Camera also.

 

I believe the 360 cam is only with the advanced technology package which adds 1000s to the price - not sure if those are the same. So yes you can get it but your OR is probably over 45k msrp because you typically only see that combined with premium package.

 

I finally signed up after lurking since November. I've been talking a few dealers in my area since earlier December both have been unable get the package with the tonneau cover. The process toyota seems to use feels broken to me. I've ordered cars from BMW and Volvo over my life and never had issues like this. Yes they can the tonneau locally but you also get stuck with other garbage port add ons that can't get deleted........ I've had 2 lunars offered neither able to be modified prior to being built. Waiting game.

 

What’s your ideal spec? Dealers can remove things supposed to be put on at port if you catch the allocation beforehand. However they don’t all want to do it or not all have the clout to do it.

Sorry to hear you had to pass on two separate trail editions. Many are just buying any trim with the stuff that comes on it, the port system is just a middle man for them to make money and it does suck. But you can get it removed.

 

Only looking for lunar with the cover. The 2 that they've had at the 2 dealers both have had close to$1000 port in add-ons and (from what I've learned here) I've asked but was unable to get them removed. Maybe it's a North East thing who knows. Closest one I've found to me spec'd to my liking is in Pennsylvania which is a different region but offers the same options as my northeast region. Hopefully things change and they start rolling them out with options offered in there build pages. Keep waiting.

 

Honestly that’s not bad. At least a Tonneau can be added post delivery. 1000 is on the low end for port options sadly.

We don’t know the production numbers on the Trail but it was 7000 last year. Sadly this is a market of mostly taking something close to ideal not usually exact. Especially with Toyota’s stupid way of like you said I ordering.

I really hope you get what you want! If you have the time to wait hopefully one pops up.

My dealer was able to both change the color and add the tonneau while it was in allocation prior to being built. It is necessary, because the tonneau has different top covers on the bed sides. Also, I know that many on this forum disagree, but I like the OEM tonneau better then aftermarket because it does not disrupt the sliding rail system. One point you can consider: there have been OEM tonneaus for sale here and on Craig’s list and you can switch out the bed side covers with the seller for an exact fit.

 

I have no Tonn-O-pinion in regards to its quality,

but for the color/add-ons, yeah I agree. I think color is something that really is dealer to dealer and where it is in the pipeline. You certainly can't do that in every case, and especially now, we are in worlds of different situation from even a year ago. It's pretty much take it or leave it now.

But yes, you absolutely can add or subtract port options - is the tonneau a port option or factory?

 

I was able to change whatever I wanted with my allocation other than the trim level, transmission, cab/bed size, and paint color. All packages, add-ons, and ports options could be changed before build date. I've heard of other people being able to change paint also.

 

In the northeast it's given as the middle tier t.e. Package. There are 3 levels in my region. The base t.e. Package then the t.e. Package with the tonneau and the 3rd has advanced auto with no tonneau. But all the dealer's have been getting only the base t.e. Package.

 

I found a Lunar Rock TE available in North Charlotte but the dealership is asking $6k over MSRP. Total would have been $48,945 plus tax and title, so around $52k.

 

I'm so glad I'm not in the market for a new truck right now.
