I've read more in the past about drag from the seal design of various hubs more than pawl drag. Either way it's a small difference in real life. Likely only noticeable on the stand while freewheeling.

I live in a land of lakes. I always bring a rod on overnighters. I bank on getting something for my dinner and breakfast.
Keep casting until I have enough calories to get home again.

That looks pretty sweet! Too far away to get something like that in my neck of the woods. Closest thing I have is the Green Mountain Gravel Growler (which I would love to do, but my fitness needs to be MUCH higher to even consider it).

Seals, dirt, and heavy grease definitely increase drag more than pawls. But, if you're the kind of person with dirty, heavy grease, in an unmaintained freehub, adding extra pawls is not in your best interest.

On a non xc-race bike its negligible. I don't care much about the cons of extra pawls on my mountain bike but I definitely wouldn't run a high engagement freehub on my road bike.

Back in the good old days of open ball hubs us track riders would do one of two things: run the hubs with no seals at all or run them with seals but only a few drops of the lightest oil. Then clean and re-grease or oil them after every event.

That was rough. Worse yet to the viewer, once you knew the outcome, you could go back and watch his rebound buck him every jump and knew it was a matter of time.

We had a local guy have a similar thing happen at Deer Valley a few years ago. Taking a breath at the top of "Tsunami" and a different group rolled up. Shot the shit for a min then they let us drop in first. Get to the bottom and a short while later, you see lifeflight come overhead. One of the guys we had just been talking to clipped the tabletop/landing transition and javelined himself into the belly of the landing.

Docs said he'd never walk again, and I think I saw an article that through willpower, was back on a bike in just a few months.

"MTB is an inherently dangerous activity" so says the waiver, and it's true.

We have a place in the Bay Area (East Bay). I'll be in your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks though since I'm making a visit to 88 Rotors for some upgrades to my truck there.

Anyone in Nor Cal Bay Area interested in a Mojo 4, size Medium in blue for their Mojo HD5, hit me up. It's too close in travel from my Ripley. Less than a year old, solid condition. Maybe you're tired of pedaling a big bike, I know I was when I had a long travel bike at times.

I’m jealous. Temps are down into the teens and twenties here for a while now and I’d love an indoor setup just to relieve some stress!

I know lots of us have used Handup gloves. Anyone have experience with the Cold vs ColdER gloves? Looking for something for the winter in the PNW (wet and 35-45ish temps).

Your timing is off. Got a set of cold weather 7idp gloves I coulda sent your way with the shims. I have some HandUp ones as well, but I’m keeping those. Even though I’ve never used them haha.

I just rode today with the Cold Handups. Temps were around mid 30's. My hand stayed warm. When it gets to below 30's, I prefer OR (Outdoor Research) gloves.

I’m running Fox Ranger gloves down to about 20 degrees.

I wouldn't likely be riding below mid 30s here (rarely gets that cold). So you think the Cold is good for that range? I sent a message to Handup to see what they say. Meant to order some a couple months ago but spaced. I've also lost my normal gloves it seems.

Not HandUp, but the Pearl Izumi AmFib Lite gloves are pretty much exactly what you described. They run a little small. Try on if you can. I wear these fat biking and love them. For a similar-type glove and colder temps (20-30), I use the 45North Nokken.

You should be good to the mid-30's with the Cold. However, everyone is different. If your hands sweat a lot, you might get cold anyway. In that case, buy 2 pairs and always bring a dry pair to change into halfway through the ride.
