That does make sense. However, I won't be using it for shop heat. I want to put it in my 50' driveway when I concrete it so I don't have to shovel the driveway.

It's propylene glycol and water in the system. Which is not to be confused with the ethylene glycol that's used in vehicles.

If there's an issue with one of the lines in the concrete.. well you're mostly screwed and close the valves for that zone.

The other day I stopped for fuel. Filled it myself. Checked my own oil & tire air pressure. Walked in & the Guy who’s standin’ there takin’ my money has got a Tip jar in front of ‘em. For what? The way you take my CC? I remember pumpin’ gas & we Had to do those things or at the very least ask. Think I remember every Tip I evergot.

Then you might want think about geothermal. You only need 50* for ice melt.

Throw some loops of PVC pipe in the bottom of a pond or trench in some PVC pipe below the frost level and use that as the heat source. No boiler needed. Just pumps that can move the water the calculated distance.

Of course I'm simplifying, but if you have real state, the cost goes down

The newer pex is very durable.

I kept my 3 loops at 250'. No joints in the slab. In fact my hoist base actually spans over one of my loops.

If your site prep is proper, you won't have any issues with breaks...unless someone drills into a pex tube. Yikes!

One of the neat things about the thermal cameras we have at the FD is that you can see the lines in the concrete with one of them. (Provided the system is running)

All my runs are connection free as well. I ran mine in a redundant pattern though. I have 3 lines and if one ever failed the other two would keep up.

It took off pretty fast here but as always soil movement (who ever thought of building a city on an ancient dry sea bed) & very poor thermal conductivity make it OK but not ideal for stand alone here. Corrosion is also a concern. This clay here is terrible.

    Lol.

I too used a thermal camera from my local FD to map my loops.

I had hundreds of pics showing the install if my pex with measurements, yet I could not make myself drill into the slab until I thermo mapped the loops.

My coworker (FD Chief) brought over the camera and we took pictures of the heat signature.

    It worked great.

I love federal ammo but I’ll be damned if I would pay that much for turkey loads.

I dug out some old pictures and took pictures of my pictures haha.

My layout. Instead of doing 3 different zones I ran redundant zones.

    20220122_191053.jpg

The pex lines come into a box that was sunk in the concrete. The lines were pressurized when the concrete was poured to protect them. The box comes apart from the inside so when I get around to setting this up, it will all be copper and no chance of cutting a line.

    20220122_191039.jpg

A side view of the box set in the concrete.

Menards had some very useful displays for radiant heat. I used them for some inspiration when putting mine together.

I already have a reputation for falling asleep under vehicles, can't imagine me with a heated floor.
Pro tip: Don't fall asleep under a leaker...

They will have a whole aisle on radiant heat.. there's worksheets etc you can fill out to work out all the details etc.. it makes it a lot easier than taking all our random advice.
