Maybe if you post speed and RPM’s in other gears we could figure something out. Like 4th at 50mph and 3rd at 35mph, etc.

I think @0xDEADBEEF might be on to something. I think these motors idle at about 6 or 700 rpm.

    That’s still too high. I bet it’s a 4cyl gauge cluster.

If you drive my old International Scout, which goes 63 at 4000 RPM, and then get back in your Toyota, all your problems would feel solved.

I saw the video and I feel like the RPM's don't match the engine.

I did. I think your tach is registering higher than the motor is actually turning.

This makes sense. If you have an OBDii reader with an rpm readout, it might help

Get yourself a scan gauge. This is normal operating temp. Used to idle at 1500 until I fixed some leaks.

4 cylinder cluster seems to be the most likely explanation, but does anyone know why? Rpm is independent of number of cylinders. Both the 3rz and 5vz have 32 tooth crank wheels (if I recall correctly) that the sensor reads position from, so why would it be different? Unless they just programmed them to interpret the signal differently to make life hard.

Does the 3rz redline higher than the 3.4? That would let us know if the cluster had been swapped.

I think someone messed with the cluster. Maybe took it apart and didn’t put the needle on correctly. Looks too new to not have been messed with. Only way to tell if it’s correct is to read the rpms through obd.

I listened to your video and sure sounds to me like your running high rpm’s at 4,000 indicated. It’s sure not an actual 1900-2000 rpm at 70mph. So have to disagree with others.

Do the test suggested in post #11 and you’ll know.

IMO, sound does not match the tachometer at all. I bet that's the incorrect gauge as previously mentioned.

Also, my MT truck doesn't have that slot in between the tach and speedo where the autos have the gear position indicator.

So makes me wonder if someone swapped in a cluster from an automatic.
