Agreed, those RPMs dont match. There is a phone app that will tell you RPMs from sound, but it's $9.00. Android there is apparently a free one.

I just swapped in a cluster on mine with that slot and it works as it should.

You can see when he throws it into neutral at the end of the video, it idles down to 1500. Way high. Op can try to redline it as @tacoma4 suggested lmao. We can compare rev limiters

I would assume they get the tach reading from the same place regardless of trans, but just points to the fact that that cluster is not factory.

Also yes my 5 speed cluster has that middle strip but blocked off like OP's.

I’m curious now since yours is the factory gauge, if it really doesn’t have the center piece for autos. I think my old one had it as well unless that one was swapped at some point too.

You would think they’d be interchangeable for cost reasons on Toyotas part.

Do your gauges have red numbers like the OPs? Looking at ones on ebay for 2000-2004 the white faced ones have black numbers. Just wondering if you’re on to something, hard to tell from a video but OPs cluster looks pretty new for a 2002.

Mine look black, and are amber when the lights are on. I was going to post a video of my speedo mph with 33's on 4.10's for reference but I think the Admins/Moderators have me shadow-banned and cut my forum bandwidth speed or something cause it takes me 10 minutes to post and much longer to post a video. Click my profile and find my post about my video.

Hmm. I don’t know if this is really any help, but is the truck idling high? And if it is at high rpm’s in general I’d check the throttle body to see if it’s clean as well as the tps and the idle air control valve. If these things are dirty it can make your truck want to run at higher rpms than it should. I recently fixed a 96 3.4 5VZ from being at high rpm’s consistently by doing these things. If these things don’t work then I would probably check for vacuum leaks and look more into your rear differential gear ratios.

That is the best explanation I've heard. If that truck as the V6, 5 speed, and 4.10 rear axle with P265/70R16 tires (stock stuff) it would be turning 2640 rpm at 70 mph in 5th gear. If the cluster is for a 4 cylinder that would read 3960 rpm. Those white face clusters with tachometer seem pretty popular too.

His first post he said he’s running 33s (32.8”) so somewhat less rpm’s at 70 mph.

I’m thinking that the cluster receives a pulse each time a spark plug fires, instead of each revolution of the engine. That’s the only reason I can think that the two clusters would be different. Probably makes the needle more responsive.

@BartMaster1234 do you remember if there’s an easy to tell difference between 4 and 6 cylinders clusters?

On the 4 cylinder ones, the area above 65mph shows no signs of wear :)

Before I start a war here, I own a 4cyl, so I get to talk trash.

Haha I like it. Same here. Except my wear stops at 75 due to interstate. :D

You guys are right, it is there on mine. Just looks way more obvious on OPs video than on my truck. :notsure:

Anyways, I read recently that the tach signal comes from the ignitor, so it makes sense that a 4cyl tach would read higher. A little more reading seams to indicate you need to make sure the engine size is correct when swapping clusters.

Might question this but at that rate you should be getting worst than terrible gas mileage. Some thing in this picture doesn't add up.

Let us know what you figure out on this. Have you ran a carfax on this truck? I hope someone didn’t swap the cluster out in order to make it appear lower mileage than it is.
