I was thinking of putting a set of TRD wheels on my 2020 SR and have a question regarding the TPMS sensors. The guy took the sensors off the wheels. Do I need to buy a set for alloy wheels vs using the ones on my steel wheels and will I also need the TRD wheel lug nuts?

    TIA

Yes, your steel wheel sensors will not work in aluminum wheels.

I bet you’ll have get new nuts.

You can get the tire installer to turn the sensors 180 degrees. They will work fine. Changed my steel sr wheels, with off-road wheels. Had the tech do a 180 degree on the sensors and they have been fine for 11,000 miles. If you need to change tires or unmount a tire just tell the tech about the change. They need to start the dismounting opposite of the valve stem and monitor as they stick out into the tire rather than hug the center of the wheel. No resetting necessary. Saves a lot of $$$$

It is possible to re-use the steel sensors if you turn them 180 degrees but many tire shops will not do it, or not try. It makes them not lay flat against the inside of the wheel and would be more prone to damage when airing down, getting a flat or future tire replacement. When removing the tires in the future, you will need to drop the sensor/stem prior to putting on a removal machine.

You will need new mag seat style lugs for the alloy wheels.

One more question. I'm buying a used set of rims and tires with the TPMS sensors. Will the sensors that were on a different truck work on mine?

They should be programable to your truck.

Any idea what that process involves? I recently picked up a set of new takeoffs with Toyota sensors in them.

If you end up choosing to buy sensors for new (or new to you) alloy wheels vs the 180 degree method already mentioned, you can buy your own Toyota OEM alloy wheel TPMS sensors from TireRack.com and several other places online for much cheaper than the dealership then get them programmed to your truck at most tire shops, just the same as programming someone else's sensors from a set of used wheels. Most dealers will also program OEM sensors they didn't sell to you, but call to check for sure.

So not something that can just be done with techstream etc. damn. Maybe I can have the dealership do it instead of rotating my tires for my final yota care appointment…

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I have a bad OEM sensor at <6k miles. Took it to dealer and they blamed it on the tire shop when I had my new tires put on when the truck was shortly off the lot, new. I had 5k on the tires. The did end up making it work but it took a shit again within a day. I'm not going through that bullshit again, leaving the truck and all the BS that go with the shop experience. So here I am today with a TPMS light on everyday.

You can get good sensors for so much cheaper than dealers and shops. My local Big Brand that does all my tires quoted me $360 for 4 new sensors if I were to change out my old. For my new wheels I'm putting on, $55 a piece and I'm guessing that's it considering they're breaking down and installing the tires on the new wheels anyway. So, $220 plus tax for sensors. I said 'fuck it' and went on Amazon Friday and bought an Autel TS508 programmer and 4 rubber stem MX-1 dual frequency sensors and I'm doing it on my own from here on out. Cost me <$400 ($120 for the sensors). I got it overnight as it showed up yesterday. I can't program OEM sensors but I can program, clone, OBD the Autels to the Toyota ECU. Turns out, after asking, that's exactly the system that Big Brand uses and sells.

Does anyone know if the bare bone SR 4cyl can see tire pressure via the Toyota app?

You can't see it in the truck instrument cluster like SR5 or above trim that I know for sure

I can comment on my 2021 SR 6cyl at least. I also can't (or don't know how if possible) view live tire pressure on my dash anywhere; I just get notified when it is low with no specific numbers shown. In the Toyota app I can see the actual individual tire pressure but they didn't make it super easy to find. I have to start by tapping the "My Garage" at the top of the screen then locating "Tire Pressure" under the "Maintenance" heading. Tapping on that reveals this:

nice, thanks, I see that you rock those aftermarket wheels instead of the steelies, that means the alloy sensors will work with SR, I'll go that route too. Not being able to see individual pressure in the truck is not a big deal if the app can see. The low tire pressure light on the SR is just too insensitive to find a slow leak. I much prefer the individual exact read out, and if a tire is 3-5 psi lower, which won't trigger the low pressure warning, chances are there's a nail in it, and I can find it sooner

Sure thing, happy to help. To be perfectly honest I'd been grumbling about not being able to see actual live PSI per tire a while now and didn't consider looking in the app until your post, so you've helped me resolve a source of aggravation myself. And yep, I got the Pacific OEM alloy TPMS and they've been great on my aftermarket wheels - no issues whatsoever.

On the sensitivity issue, I had assumed the low tire pressure warning wasn't so much about sensing a precise amount of pressure escaping over time (a sensitivity issue) as much as notifying that a specific PSI threshold had been crossed, but I'm not certain. Here's why I thought this though; it has gotten colder recently and I'd been running all tires around 31 PSI, but the colder weather took them all to around 26 or so. This triggered the notification about low PSI. I aired back up to the above numbers and the warning goes away. There was another instance prior to airing them back up that I had an urgent place to be and simply drove on the tires starting at 26 PSI and the drive was long enough that (I presume) they warmed up and the PSI increased enough for the warning to go away. It returned the next cold morning though, which is why I just put them all around 35 or so.

Check this in your Toyota app: Account> data privacy portal> ***then ensure that "connected services master data consent" shows "accepted"

I'm thinking that's the culprit most likely.
