What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

DC-DC charger is the way to go. Doesn't matter what chemistry or size your house battery is.

If you're worried about jumping the starting battery just carry a portable lithium jump pack.

 

I’ve thought about going that route as well, but something about having the batteries inside the cab has always made me hesitant. Even understanding that they aren’t your typical lead acid units with the risks that come with them.

Looking forward to seeing your solution, though.

 

Is the exact reason why I won't carry any of those lithium ion jump packs. I've already seen them burn down a couple rigs. I don't particularly want to be the next one. But you can buy vented battery boxes that are fully safe to put sealed AGM batteries in. They even have vent tube nipples if you want to route them to the outside which I'm probably going to do. This design is actually common practice now on European cars that have their batteries in the trunk anyway.

 

This is true, it is only monitoring for voltage differences. But all three of those things can have an impact on voltage.

Like I said, it will be interesting to see if this works well and as expected. My Northstar's just turned 6 and so far seem healthy and happy, but I expect to have to replace them at some point. I would like to move the starting battery to the bed or the cab when that happens.

 

Making these bad boys fit will have to wait 5-6 weeks unfortunately… got the news that I gotta head back to Saudi early for some BS… not gonna lie, I’m a little bummed out lol.

I 3D printed and painted this a few days ago and then I laser engraved this a couple of days ago so I didn’t have to spend over $150 for a TRD exhaust tip.

 

Well now I have an idea for my exhaust tips on my tundra. Nice

 

I replaced a gernaded starter and broke an exhaust stud in the process so got to replace that too. But all is well now.

Ah I wondered what happened to that guy. I liked his build a lot.

My dad has been running a smaller lead acid battery for years as a starter and a giant deep cycle to power all the radios and shit. It has never caused him issues even when winching.

 

How did you break a stud doing that?

oooh, I took mine out through the wheel well.

 

couldn't get mine to do that with the brake lines in the way. Figured since I'd just pulled the cat it would come apart easy. It did, except for one stud snapped. So yeah.

Starter was super easy to take out and install the new one with it out of the way though.

 

Hmm I can’t remember what I had to move to get mine out that way, I remember I had to fight with it forever though.

Atleast you got it out though.

 

I didn't dick with it long before saying fuck it and zipping the nuts off the cat. I removed the dip stick too which also helped.

 

I'm pretty sure the brake lines are bolted onto the frame right there somewhere? I think that, along with the dip stick is how I got it out of there.

Was pretty easy getting the starter out in the 4R; do the brake lines not have a bracket bolted to the frame on Tacoma's?

If not, then I get why it'd be difficult.

But I found it easy with the exception of getting square on the top bolt to prevent stripping it.
