A little something every chance we get.
:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gals! Absolute bare minimum on the schedule. Biscuits and gravy coming up for breakfast will keep me going slow for quite a while! It's a grey 45*, and only going to make 55* before some needed rain tonight and tomorrow. Good day for some more football!
Maybe I will get a little fiberglass brush set, and learn to clean from the bottom. At 2 fires a season,.....
    Thanks Tex!
    have a good one everybody!

    Morning all:
Not sure on that Dave, there are different rules and I think a spouse wouldn't need to pay any tax on an IRA, a son/daughter 4%, and almost anyone else 15%, could have changed though since I did it, possibly different rules for a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA since one is tax deferred and the other tax free. ???, I didn't need to get into that.
One thing we all need to watch is them changing the rules, I had mentioned this prior, a general power of attorney was good for everything at one time, then they came up with the durable power of attorney and made the general less inclusive!
I saw an article where an investment banker turned around 20K into 5 million non taxable in his Roth IRA, they don't like that and were mentioning changing the rules on Roth IRA's.

The hotter the better for the least amount of creosote. I get way less, and more heat using pressed wood blocks instead of firewood. They burn hotter, easier cleanup, no firewood work involved, and no embers popping out through the fireplace screen.

Safety: Always use a carbon monoxide detector. Hot embers in the ash bed will seek out something to burn when they run out of fuel. They start burning oxygen, and the byproduct is carbon monoxide.

I have been burning wood in our home for about 35-40 years. Burning in My garage for about 25 years. My flue in the house is about 38 ft in the air. The construction of it is clay tile lined all the way up the outside of our home (3- 4 stories tall). My garage flue is a triple wall zero clearance stainless steel. This flue is only about 15-20 ft in height. I clean both 1-3 times a year. Believe it or not the garage flue is more prone to creosote buildup. Both flues have one bend on the way up. I burn the same one year+ dried wood in both. I think the reason the house builds up less is the sheer height of it -it has terrific "draw". Garage has a cap and home does not.
Moral of the story -keep your flue clean -we use ropes and a brush on the home and I use rods and a brush on the garage. Oh, BTW the house is a 8 inch and the garage is a 6 inch. Remember -every flue and every installation is different and when you add in the variables of type and dryness of the wood - this can be tricky.
SUMMING UP - if in doubt CLEAN IT!!

We have 2 45° bends that compensate for the 2+ foot difference between the stove and the "up" pipe. Straight up from there.
    Double wall, then triple wall.
We do get a good draw, but better when hot, of course.

Wow... I've had homes I heated with wood, and homes with fireplaces, and I've never cleaned a chimney in my life. Never worried about it. I've known people that went ten years between cleanings or more. Never known anyone to have a chimney fire. I've heard they happen, but I've never met anyone that has had one.

IMG_5816.jpg Wow! What a football weekend that was! I don't remember any 4 consecutive games as great as these were! The Niners are going tom have a tough row to hoe going forward, but that's my team and always has been!

A lot of you guys are always talking about your smoker or BBQ, well, now it's my turn to brag on the tri tip I cooked tonight. You must know going in that it was a Costco Prime, they don't get any better than that. Lottsa garlic stuffed in all over, salt & pepper rub. My wife suggested the cooking method, gotta give credit where due... She said put it in a dutch oven, no lid, 20 minutes at 475º F. There was room for a couple of potatoes, so they got slathered with butter and kept the roast company. After the first browning 20 minutes, gurgle in about a cup of red wine. I had some cab already opened, so in it went, lid on, lower the temp to 350º F for an hour. I actually remembered to set the timer on both times, and didn't forget it. The roast was as tender and tasty as any I've ever had, the potatoes were perfect, and on the bottom of the dutch oven was the most delicious au juc! I did put in some Better Than Bullion, but it really didn't need it. I let it set while I carved the roast and served, long enough to be able to skim off the clear grease on top. Tomorrow's leftovers will be hot roast beef open face sandwiches drenched in leftover au jus. Side note, the wife can't stomach beef that's sh owing some pink, so I adapt for her sake. I would think 15 minutes less for medium well. No pic, we ate it.

Pic is what came in the mail today. $5.22 each after tax not bad, ordered from Amazon. Might fit more than just 2nd gen sixes, I don't know. These should last me till I'm pushing up daisies.

Lucky you -- I don't take those chances. I would bet most fire departments would disagree with your policy, to say nothing of your insurance company.

Agree with you on the games - after watching the first three, I was hoping the Chiefs would have an easier time. Boy was I wrong, that game was one of the best I have seen in my 74 years. And yes, I would have to admit the same had the Bills won. I'm goin to bed -I hope my adrenalin level has calmed down enough for me to sleep!

    Good morning fellow Porchatonians!!

Football games were exciting this weekend. All of them came down to the final seconds or overtime.

We had about an 1/2" of powdery snow overnight - not enough to plow/snow blow so I'll shovel it off the area by the garage that is in the shade and let the sun do its thing.

Going to take our recycling in to the center this morning.

    Stay safe and warm.

I just want to thank everyone for their input and suggestions concerning my note from a page or 2 back.
I'm looking at this a ongoing process.
I have a lot of questions and I'm sure that the farther we get into this we'll have more.
    Thanks again!

TY for the thread link. I can plug away at the thread when I am not busy.

Today is a quick shopping trip then taking apart an 8X12 pop up canopy frame that came down in the heavy snow. Then get started on documenting all the home expenses. Somewhere in all of this I have 2 racks of ribs to cook. and practice the guitar.

    Chimney fire.
I know someone who went a little long between cleaning. Damage to the house. I do not know details but the fire department saved the house.
I first notice that the draw is less, and that tells me to check the cap. If the cap is dirty, I clean the pipes.
Cannot clean the pipes too many times ... :)

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Peoples! Well, light rain just now started, and it can rain all day. Just need enough break to get some ribs going. Going to clean and toss office papers while it rains. Oh, yippie. But if I do my stuff, maybe the wife will get rid of school she's been retired from! Have a great day everyone.

    Morning all:

I have never had a chimney fire, but I did see 2! On the way to work we saw flames shooting out the top of the chimney at a house, stopped there and alerted the owner, also looked out my front window one day and saw flames coming out of a chimney at a neighbor's house, went over and alerted him. Like was posted, the hotter the better + the type of wood dictate weather a chimney needs to be cleaned on occasion or more often.

Watched the games also, those last second wins have to be heartbreaking to the losing teams, especially now during the playoffs.

Why not Dino oil every 5000 miles as per the owners manual? (Or synthetic every 8 to 10000 miles).
In any event let’s not get into an oil discussion as there are already a zillion of them on TW and every single one useless.

The Corvette "specialist" at a dealership I know intimately recommends one thousand mile oil changes to the Corvette owners... and some of them swallow the pitch. Then he saves the used oil and gives it to the rest of the shop mechanics to be used in their own vehicles. Lots of paranoia being sold in the world and I tend to think before buying. A lot of "cheap insurance" isn't cheap.
