Mike's 5lug Long Travel rear build

Well, got an early start than intended with a long travel rear since breaking my axle before new years. So currently I am stripping the whole rear down. I took off my J59's and Fox 2.0"x14" shocks. I'm planning to do this build to just do the stuff I need to make this work. I'm going to be boxing the frame, keeping the stock gas tank, running the allpro 50T pack, and king 2.5"x 16" smoothies. The bedcage is going to be very basic straight bars. Future upgrades will be hydro bumps up front and rear and a U-bolt eliminator.

Up front is already a JD fab LT. It needs some upgrades once the rear is done. Hoping to keep a good balance there.

Nice 5 lug long travel truck! Is that a trussed 7.5 rear end? What size tires are you running @ what gears?

 

Forgot in your PM. I really like the JD kit up front. It is strong, huge 10" shock. I have a fabtech spindle to clear 32" tires. Weakest points are those fabtech spindles and the lower ball joint. I carry an extra set for when i go out to the desert. The rear is a trussed 7.5" with 4.56. I'm doing 60 when the speedo says 70 and about 5mph off at slower speeds.

Nice. I wished we could have got to Lucerne earlier that day so I could see it happen.

 

It wasn't too impressive of a break. I stopped where you guys saw me to take a break and looked underneath and saw a broken axle. I didn't try to move so I can save my third member.

So the build again.


Got the hangers on and is pulling out 22" travel and is being held up at 20" in the pic. There is no drive shaft binding at any height. Right now on the list is shock position and bedcage building. Using a King 2.5"x16" hoping to get a smooth 18". Having a shock tab issue. The stock gas tank is in the way so I'm working on cutting up some shock tabs to mount behind the axle over the truss.

 

very nice, how long are you shackles? tc 12 inchers?

 

I used 12" engage shackles and hangers. Very similar to TC in looks.

 

i tried googling engage toyota shackles and engage shackles and nothing came up. Are they cheaper than tc? 300 for those tc shackles seem like a rip off. I'm about to get ruff stuff to cut me some 10-12"ers but i'm open to options.

 

Maybe you can try to mount the shocks outside the frame rail? and use spacers?

 

I tested to see if 2 inch spacers work and it didn't look too safe when I'd wheel slow. My old 2.0's would fit. So I'm running the shocks inboard. I can get 16" to work over 19" of travel and building the bed cage off of this and strapping it at 18" Today is tacking the bedcage and finally start boxing the frame tomorrow.

It's almost alive! Just need to slap in the battery, rear electrical, weld on new spare tire tabs, more cage work to hold the resi, and bolt the brake proportioning valve to the bottom of the bed. Sorry about the wait there guys. So she sits stupid tall right now. 13" before I even touch the bump stop and about 4" of down travel before the straps kick in. I'm going to jump on it some to hope it comes down. Depends on how it rides will make me decide what other leaves I want to pull out. Right now I have the 5th leaf out.

 

looks good awesome work. Im debating if i want to spend 3k plus on the my truck. if i could find a deal like you i would jump on it
