Anyone get an allergy test done on their dog? If so what did it cost? Vet based test. i don't trust the at home tests. And did the results help resolve any issues?

Our recently adopted dog has settled in and likes the couch, loveseat and matching chair. She spends time on each of them every day. When you're almost 10 years old, you're allowed to take naps!

Thank you I think I used portrait mode on my iPhone 11?
This is after playing in the river. We had miles of public access and an lived about a block away so he was spoiled. The fishing was great too.

Dropped my oldest guy, Elroy, off at the vet this morning. He'd been losing a bit of weight lately but he seemed to be going downhill quickly over the last 24 hours. He's just waiting for a vet to have time to look at him. Hoping it's nothing too serious but I'm pretty worried. He really wasn't well this morning.

He’s dialed in. My moms German Shepperd has intense focus great when he’s working but sometimes it’s a pain to get him out of that mode.

Tell me about it. I’m getting a delivery for my patio project and he is very focused on the driver.

Turns out the poor dude has diabetes. He is going to stay at the vet overnight to keep him on fluids.

Luckily he's a pretty easy dog. So the daily insulin injection and glucose checks shouldn't be too challenging.

Talking to the vet and doing some research it looks like this can just happen to dogs his age with no known reason.

Before discovering the tumor on Riley's spleen, he was diagnosed with diabetes. It's easily managed. I noticed your location as Manitoba so I can't say for sure but in the states, Walmart sells insulin for $25. Insulin can be much more expensive so it's worth having a discussion with your vet about the types of insulin and what would be appropriate and if Novalin is appropriate. You may want to ask your vet about the Freestyle Libre and whether that would help with management of the disease. Riley went for a 12hr glucose curve every few months. The Libre does it for 2 weeks at a time making dosage a lot more accurate.

    Good luck.

Appreciate the info! We still have a lot to wrap our heads around.

The silver lining to the whole thing is that we get to use our insurance. Ha. My wife went with the most comprehensive insurance she could find so insulin and medication cost is, thankfully, not going to be an issue.

The biggest part for me was not the cost but Walmart also sells insulin products without prescription. So if I didn't have to deal with the appointment and hassle of getting a refill prescription.

I did a lot of reading about diabetes in dogs. I probably asked way more questions too. I was truly grateful for the vet we found by accident--she was incredibly knowledgeable and explained a lot of things his regular vet wasn't able to.

As you probably noticed, your pup is drinking a lot of water. There are other things to look for, like lethargy. Keeping some kind of liquid sugar around, like honey, can be helpful. Seems like the time they're most likely to have problems can be easily determined with the Freestyle Libre. For us it was between midnight and six am.
Speaking of drinking, that also means going potty more often and you may even have some accidents--it's part of learning.

No experience with diabetic pets but when I lived with a diabetic family member we kept the tiny gel icing tubes or honey sticks in every vehicle. They're small and invaluable when you need them.
