Which 6.5" components?

Yes, stock location. I have some black abs plastic that ill use to make a mount inside of the door.

 

I would think so. With the Metra tweeter location adapter plates, they should fit. Depth is fine, so it’s centering them for the door card hole that would be hardest.

 

THanks for the feedback guys. I've used that same plastic to make tweeter mounts before as well. It works really well. I am definitely going to consider these with some 6.5's in the rear. Any amp recommendations? It's been a while since I've bought car audio gear so I'm not up so speed on what is considered good these days.

Personally, I don’t mind a class-d amp for my mids/highs. Others swear they can hear a difference between class-d and class a/b. Size is a factor, A/B being bigger. Power, channels/bridged power/distortion etc. I went with a Kenwood eXcelon XR401.4 for size, bridged power and low distortion numbers. There’s really a ton of choices.

Narrow down these, 2-channel or 4? Are you amping front only or all 4? What’s the power rating you’re trying to achieve? Most importantly, what are you willing to spend?

 

"Good" is obviously subjective. I'm not looking for huge volume, mainly clarity. In the past I've used JBL/Infinity, Crossfire, Fosgate, Autotek and have been happy with them. I'm not stuck on big brands, just want something that sounds clean. 4 channel for sure to amp all 4 speakers. Not more than 100W/channel. I'm not opposed to a class D. I like their small footprint and power efficiency.

DLS UP6i Components and a IDQ 10 and I like the way that sounds. All that stuff is 10 years old now. I am not sure if I want a component subwoofer or not this time so I am thinking of getting a 4 channel now and adding a mono sub amp later if I decide I "need" that.

Edit: for got price range. I'm not set on a certain price but I like to get the most for my money. I'd like to keep it under $500 but if there is something that costs more and is worth the extra money, I could convince myself to do it.

I’ll give you the two I narrowed it down to, until I can find something that’ll be my forever amp.

As mentioned, the Kenwood eXcelon XR401-4. 75wpc, bridged to 200wpc. Low noise floor and good distortion performance. Downside is the terminals are less than stellar. I’m afraid I’m going to strip the out.

JL XD400/4v2. Same power rating. Low noise floor and slightly better distortion performance.

Both have a small footprint, and 25w less than your per channel desire will be hardly noticeable. Why did I pick the Kenwood? In Canada it’s $300 less than the JL. That’s shopping money for something better. In car audio, there’s ALWAYS better.

 

I had a cheapo Soundstream 5 channel. It performed okay for what it cost. I now have a 5 channel Alpine PDX-V9, luckily I got it off a member here, unused, for less than the msrp of 999. The sound is night and day, way more powerful and clear. Fits under the passenger seat too after a small mod to the support bar that would have otherwise rubbed the top of the amp.

The Alpine comes with a birth sheet that shows actual wattage. Its supposed to be 100x4+500x1. The sheet says 128x4+582x1, its a beast. I can use less of the power which results in less stress on the amp and normally less distortion.

The connections on the amp are very nicely designed. Id definitely vote on an Alpine.

They don’t make the PDX line anymore unfortunately. I had an M4 and an M12 for years. Canadian winters too their toll though, and they both died about 3 months apart. The newer stuff is a little too pricey for performance for me, but on paper the R-A60 is quite nice.

 

Ahh, didnt know mine was a brand new older model, hopefully it lasts.

Before I bought it I was considering the 5 channel product from Damore Engineering. They have pretty good specs and reviews but I hadn’t heard about the brand previously. They also make some pretty high end stuff.

I never bought due to getting the Alpine. Maybe ill try one on my next project.

 

Understood. I’d get one, but money conversion, duty, tax, and shipping make it cost prohibitive. Have to work the suspension on my truck first.

 

I wish i had a use for a 4 channel id use this thing.

That definitely gives me a good place to start looking. I was actually looking at the PDX 5 channel on eBay the other day. I wasn’t so sure of buying something used through there and having issues afterwards. I’ll definitely checkout that kenwood and JL audio amp as well.

I noticed the CDT speaker set is a deal they are running this month. The wide and speaker alone is normally $500.

 

You guys ever use or know much about Audiocontrol amps? I know their EQ’s and DSP’s have been badass for a long time now.

 

They are a flexible amp/DSP combo. I mainly use DSP functions on the headunit, so they would be useless to me. But they are thought of highly by many for versatility and sound. I’d say a solid investment.

 

Ditto, I have a Pioneer NEX HU that works great for auto tuning but I hear good things about Audiocontrol

 

They are nice amps, but if you don’t use the DSP, we’ll that’s $300 wasted.

Ummm…yeah. I’d MAKE myself need a 4-channel for that.

 

I ordered those widebands with the 6x9's. I also found these on sale as well that I bought for the rear doors. Says that sale on woofersetc for $850 so they seem to be marked down pretty decent.
