    Hey guys new here,

I recently switched from a rubicon to a 2021 OR with manual transmission and noticed the gearing feels super tall compared to the jeep. Wrangler Rubicon comes with 4.10 and the OR manual comes with 4.30 (unless I misread something) and yet,

the gearing on the Taco feels way taller. I dont even bother using 5th gear, I just go from 4th to 6th for freeway driving. The Taco is completely stock.

Can someone educate me on why it feels this way?

    Thanks

aside from the diff gearing, the transmission gearing is taller first is a little tricky, 5/6 is basically the same thing and don't get me started on how high the reverse gear is. Overall though happy there is still a manual option and I wouldn't be driving a tacoma if it didn't come with a stick.

The diff ratio and the transmission gearing are not the same thing. It feels tall because it is.

Would simply changing the gearing ratio fix the issue, including the ridiculous reverse gear?

2lo mod would fix the reverse issue.

Reverse usually matches the gearing for first so you have to pick your poison.

Folks complain about 1st being both too short and too tall. So, Toyota must have gotten it just right.

Most every MT these days has a Reverse gear that is taller than 1st. I suspect it is due to packaging?

Lol yeah no kidding. I’d do away with how short 1st is! Split the difference Toyota!

The gearing is this way to help with starting out and also to give a good crawl ratio... in the Auto the gearing is 3.90:1 but the torque converter effectively doubles the gearing when unlocked. So 4:30:1 is a good compromise with the standard to have decent road and offroad feel.

You could put on 265/75R16's to reduce the feel, but expect a further reduction in reverse as a consequence.

I have 265/70R17's sitting in the garage waiting on warmer weather to install, so for preparation, a 2lo mod goes in tomorrow.

This is so weird. I went from a jeep with 4.10 to the Taco with 4.30. It should on paper, feel shorter but it doesnt.
Guess Im not really understanding the mechanics behind it.

Gearing is transmission ratio multiplied by diffs to get a final ratio. Torque plays a large part, which is engine torque times the final ratio divided by tire radius.

Get a bit comfy with a site like this for more comparo details:

They don't have our gearing in the MT drop down. You'll have to use @philth 's info. Similar info is in my signature below.

.69 is the AT 5th gear. The MT is .85 with 6th being .71 . 6th would have been nice at .69 or maybe a little lower for better spread.
