Way back when dinosaurs roamed, I was a lot boy at a dealership and I backed a VW from the used car lot into a low post and dented the bumper. One of the salesman gave me a ration of shit but the service manager (my boss) just said “fuck it”. In your case I’d be pissed but I’d let them fix it and push for some extra bling.

as a teenager, I worked at a Chevy dealer in the mid to late 80's and damaged a brand new bright red, 5.7 Iroc 5 spd. Previous day crew left a steam cleaner wand out and while backing out of the tight bay with the tunes blasting and tires screeeching on the painted floor, it hooked the PS door and ripped the paint like a pinstripe down the whole door. I only noticed it by accident. I buried it in the lot and a month later was called to the front for a tag change. I saw that it was the same car and they literally only painted a rectangle of red to cover the damage, with no blending. I thought about pointing it out to the owner, but didnt want to get fired.

A (not so) wise man once said; shit happens! I hate this for you OP, but try not to let it eat you up. I have found as I have grown older that relatively minor stuff like this just does not upset me like it might have when I was younger. If this were my truck, I would let them fix it and then move on with my life. And you can choose to chase that diminished value thing if you wish, but again you have to decide is it really worth your time. A few grand does not mean shit to me, but certainly might to you! Good luck brother!

Why in the WORLD would any sane person bring back their vehicle to the same place that they crashed into to have an oil change done.

Id be effing FURIOUS if I was the OP.

Way back when I was a lot boy I seriously messed up a brand new Nissan Sentra pulling it into the racks to raise it up for rustroofing.
I pulled the car into the bay and opened up the doors. I had not set the lift under the car yet when I went in back to turn on the air compressor. I was the first one in that morning.
When I came back to the car it was suspended 6 feet off the ground by its doors just kind of rocking back and forth. The lot boy apparently took a peice of wood and proped the lift lever in the up position the night before. Why they did that I have no idea. Nobody ever owed up to it.

As a dealer tech its nice to see people here who don't think all dealerships are the devil.
I can confirm if we damage a customers car, repair it, and they keep coming back for future work, we make sure to take care of them a little extra. Slightly less labor charges, bumping car ahead in line so it gets worked on faster, maybe free throttle body cleaning if we are already in there, less likely to push "extra" services, more likely to get warranty to cover a repair, basically more likely to take care of the car/customer more.

Dealer dented my miata, they repaired it plus a couple of other spots changed the oil and detailed it for me. Went beyond what I expected

That's how it was at the dealerships i worked at. But it's not like that that now days. But at the very least, the dealership will pay OPs repairs and rental/loaner. But shit happens every where, as long as they are being decent with you. Give them a fair chance.

But sounds like a lot of us worked at dealerships when only sales was corrupt. I was always in parts mostly (one stint as make ready).

OP, you're DEFINITELY having this on your history. If you are scared of that, just use this for twisting their arm for a great deal for another truck.

Funny how age does that to you. I don’t want to fight and argue with anyone, just make it right and I’m good.

This is dealership, not some hard up single mother. They do everything they can to make a dollar off you. And it's not stopping now. He deserves compensation. It will be considered if sold or traded or if totaled later. The dealer is at fault. Period. There isn't a grey area there.

Do you really only give businesses a single chance to not mess anything up? What happens when a restaurant messes up your order or Amazon ships the wrong item or an indie car shop doesn't get a alignment quite right? Assuming they make the issue right do you still just write them off and never give them a second chance?
I appreciate a business who admits and corrects their mistakes.

No this was a Special Order possibly, I imagine it was 1986. This car had crank windows and may not have even had AC ( I cant recall) It was definitley a 350. It was on the lot for a while

IMO forgiveness not reserved for "hard up single mothers", but don't disagree re: fault.

Curious what amount the pro-diminished-value crowd here would expect based on the hypothetical of it hurting the value later. If it was a salvaged title I think it'd be an obvious case, but what sorta number would you put on a repaired body panel? Seems like mechanically it hurts nothing, so you'd be asking for the subjective amount that a hypothetical prospective buyer would attribute to it?

I imagine people back into cars on the dealership lot now and then, I wonder to what extent they're held responsible. Repairs + potential diminished value?
