'05 Transmission Seal Problem

Hello again everyone. I've had this issue since I bought my Tacoma (so, a couple'a months now). After searching this site (and possibly finding a TSB - would like confirmation if the tranny seal TSB relates to 2005 models), I post this because I've replaced said seal twice and still having issues.



As you can see in these pictures, I apparently have a rear transaxle (correct term?) seal leak. Looks like a small amount but this picture was taken today, and the amount of fluid visible has been slightly greater before; I've wiped it clean a few times to verify the leak is still there. I purchased a replacement seal from my local O'reilly, and the leak persisted. Replaced the seal with the same seal (thinking the seal I bought was defective) and yet the leak is still there. I have a friend who suggested buying an OEM seal and perhaps that will fix it, but I figured before I did the replacement work again (and possibly needing to buy more WS ATF) I'd present this problem to you fine people to get advice/feedback/suggestions. Any help would be greatly apprciated.

Also: may or may not be related, but I've noticed all this discoloration in these areas and wondering if it's normal?

I have not had the issue with the tranny seal. What discoloration are you seeing, do you have any pictures? Or are you talking about the second square on the trans fluid pan (that is not a technical term)?

 

Honestly from my othe4r seal replecements experience. if your seal leaks again I would get prop shaft checked and replace bearing that supports output shaft

I believe that seal has been upgraded from the 05 OEM. Is the one you got a new version with two lips or the old one with a single lip?

 

Hmmm.... honestly don't know, friend. A friend of mine was supposed to help me replace the seal, but he ended up doing it himself (perfectionist and all, it's all good). It was a National seal, one of the 4 on this page:

As for the double-lip, I think I remember reading something about that on one of the TSB pages, but I was unclear weather that was for my specific truck or not. If so, I'll purchase the double-lip type and replace it asap. I'm just looking for a confirmation

I just did this myself, but I bought the OEM replacement part. On the TSB it states there is a new seal, a double lipped one and a part #. update part 90311-40034

 

Thank you kindly, SurfnWolf. That's what I thought I was reading in the TSB. Just wanted to make sure B4 I put the wrong part on. I'll get one ordered and have it replaced asap. Next step: checking and possibly adding WS ATF. I'll keep this thread updated. Might be some time tho. Thanks again!

But you already replaced seal before so there is something else wrong. Your truck is pre-runner so I would look realy carefull at driveshaft and u-joints, also I am pretty sure there is bearing behind the seal it may need replacing too. I would do it right so you dont have to replace the seal so often.

Curious to see the info on here. Just noticed that I have the exact same leak.

 

On the how to, Im sure Chris would be more of an expert, as I was just assisting a friend, however..we had to drop the whole shaft down, from the rear, to the middle carriage bearing, and pull it out...to replace the seal....once replaced, we drained and refilled with WS at fluid.

 

I bought mine new back in 05 and had the same drip. Brought it in to get fixed six times. They kept telling me it was fixed or nothing wrong and of course you can't check the fluid. I can't remember how many times they replaced the seal, at least twice along with some insulator. Then they replaced Type T oil seal extension housing and it still leaked. It was finally fixed when they replaced the drive shaft assembly w/ inter shift R&R and shaft assembly proplle and seal, what ever all that was. I think it was everything after the transmission. Toyota has a Technical Service Bulletin on it #00106 for the 2 wheel drive.

 

I found the same leak today after washing the truck. Now I have to take it into the dealer friday to get fixed.

 

As you can see from what I had done they tried fixing a little at a time until they replaced everything. I was lucky and everything was under the warranty. If yours isn't and they want to charge big bucks, reference the Technical Service Bulletin on it #00106. They know they have a defect and should cover it.

Every fucking seal possible was replaced under drivetrain warranty on my old preowned 05 ac prerunner that I had from 51k thru 88k and no, it wasn't offroaded or constantly dogged out or flailed upon, quite the reverse......rear main, front timing cover and crank seal, o rings in the timing cover, rear axle seals. I even had to pay for steering rack to be rebuilt because of leaky seals. OP that would be tailshaft seal. They did that one too on the 05. Seems to be the exception not the rule according to folks here but doesn't suck any less. Not surprised by your situation tho. Good luck. So far so good with my "new" 08..........it has bumper to bumper not just drivetrain warranty FTW and has 53k on it. Hoping for better luck with this one.
