I like these systems for this scenario, and they also protect you from other distracted drivers if they have the tech, as long as the system doesn't malfunction.

I test drove a Subaru Crosstrek Limited, and their system is really good. The adaptive cruise also has lane centering. I let it steer itself around a curve and I was really impressed, it really was driving itself in that scenario.

Did it beep and brake on its own, or was it Brake Assist? (just curious)

Brake Assist is really interesting to me - Toyotas have had it for about 10 years now where if you are just cruising along, suddenly get off the gas and brake hard, it will take over and deploy max available braking power. It's designed for people who may be afraid of the pulsing pedal when ABS is working, old people who might not be able to press the pedal hard enough, etc.

My 2012 Yaris (no camera or TSS or anything, but it has ABS and stability control) has it and I have had it activate a few times when people have blown stop signs and pulled right out in front of me. I'll give the brakes a quick, hard jab to slow down but it will throw out the anchors in a full threshold braking panic stop. It will let up as soon as you let off the pedal, but after putting good summer tires on it, it is nice to see how much braking power is there in reserve if really needed. With the original LRR tires it would just click the ABS helplessly, now it will stop violently and throw everything into the dashboard.

If this happened to me, I would have been tempted to stop and ask the driver why he slammed on his brakes. But in this day and age, the wise decision is to keep driving and ignore knuckleheads who drive like that. There are a lot of deranged people in our society who go out of their way to engage others in road rage behavior.

Felt like the truck took over until truck stopped.

Just curious because it can brake based on what it sees from the radar and camera, or based on what you do with the pedals (suddenly lifting the gas and braking hard). I've had my truck beep brake and brake for me when I am coasting up to someone making a right turn into a business (I can see that it'll complete the turn before I get too close) -- that's the new TSS. But haven't had it do a Brake Assist yet where I suddenly get on the brakes for something it can't see (like someone blowing a light to my right, or someone about to back out of a driveway or something).

On the other hand, system did not prevented me to hit a lady that slammed on her brakes too… nothing broke on my truck… just some clips popped but out them back… I hope I never need it.

What it is useful for me, is to alert me, not necessarily to brake for me… the alerts have been nice, I gain back attention and brake on time myself…

Definitely prone to false alerts too. Regardless of cloudy or sunny days, and often approaching underpasses.

TSS has saved me a few times already. Just the other day I was 4 car distances behind a Kia Sorento on a 40 mph road. I passed a house with a for sale sign. I glanced at the sign and the Kia infront of me came to a complete stop because of a small patch of snow in the road(the house with the sign was being plowed) If it wasn’t for the beeping I would have hit the Kia at full speed.

As a daily driver, especially if you commute in shitty traffic.. TSS is awesome. If not, just turn off what you can.

Previous Subaru owner here... that "eyesight" (their version of TSS) is TERRIBLE! It was actually dangerous how bad it was. I had it brake multiple times when it should have never done so. Had ZERO issues with the TSS in our Tacoma's. Zero complaints. I get why they can be problematic though - but from most of what I have seen about the Tacoma's system, it works when it should and minds it own business when it should. As it should be.

The system won't keep you from hitting a car. It's only meant to minimize damage and injury from the collision. Basically just slows the truck down so you don't hit the person in front of you at a fast speed.

I had similar experience and my TSS worked as it should. Thanks Toyota.

My truck slammed on the brakes before I could, it was a big wtf moment but then I realized what just happened. That might have saved me from rear ending someone.

My name is Ben and I too have had tss brakes applied. ;) I was in heavy traffic in the Bay Area, one of those places that goes from 80-3 and then back up to 80 while they all switch lanes. Not to mention a lot of lanes.

Mine works fine but nothing compared to my wife’s ford maverick, that thing drives itself.

I was reading up on the tss system when first purchased my truck. The average person is going to panic and slam on brakes anyways when the radio goes out and the truck goes to beeping. Especially when the truck starts applying the breaks itself. My truck has only actually applied the brakes once since I've had it. It's beeped several times. I don't follow close to people though. I leave a few car links. I'm not sure if I like the tss system. Heck mines beeps going around a corner into a bridge close to my house sometimes. I do think it's flawed but I keep it on for extra precaution.

Well its been the opposite for me with the tss. I can count the number fingers on one hand that i've saved that grill component from being torn off.
