How does Carfax treat stolen vehicles?

Yeah, you're right; The Camry isn't that important, but I would still love to find out what happened to my 1996 Nissan Pathfinder that got repossessed from the second owner after only ten months of ownership!

No idea; I've found out that accidents will only be reported to Carfax if the police show up and write a report; As such, the two accidents I was involved in back in 2015, both of which were NOT my fault, show up on my Tacoma's Carfax report...

However, the accident where a dumbass teenager sideswiped the front of my truck in a parking lot in 2020 and smooshed the front bumper, does not show up; I reported that accident to their insurance company and they paid out almost $450 to fix my truck, but the police were not called and the accident does not show up on the Carfax report.

I have run Carfax reports and in some cases the vehicle was reported stolen, likely because somebody calls the police when their vehicle was stolen and a report is filed; This was the case with an early 2000s Lexus LS that I saw in the spectator lot at Carlisle last summer...

    You got that right...

I say again that I felt like I was being bullied; That's why I fucking left! Two of the other admins, who I am still friends with in Facebook and still chat with, agreed with me! They're still admins, but they say the group has really gone downhill...

I plugged my old 02 Mustang into a site one time and then it asked about if l knew where the car was as it was stolen from North Carolina and never recovered.

I think the status of the car's title would reflect that, like my dad's 1992 Dodge Dakota that's was sent to the junkyard after being traded at a Mazda dealer in 2019...

The car may have been sold to someone that does their own (or no) maintenance :notsure:

But no registration renewals? Even in states with no emissions testing or safety inspections, cars would get an update to their Carfax report every time the registration was renewed. And Virginia does require emissions testing and safety inspections; If the Camry stayed in Virginia, this would have shown up; If not, it would have showed the title transfer to another state...

It could just be sitting in someone’s driveway then, or it was scrapped by a less than reputable yard who didn’t do the proper paperwork.

I'm thinking that with over 160K miles at just 8 years old, the car suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure that my friend's parents didn't believe was economically feasible to repair; Carfax shows it as passing emissions with flying colors in June 2006, and then the trail goes cold...

Did I ever tell you the story of my 1996 Nissan Pathfinder?

Makes no sense to me that a Pathfinder with less than 120K miles on it would not find a new home at a wholesale auction after getting repossessed, unless the new owner managed to totally destroy it in the 10 months they had it; The Pathfinder was 13 years old and had like 113K miles when we traded it for the Tacoma in 2009, and it had some minor rust and cosmetic blemishes, but it in above average condition and mechanically sound! I'd say there's a 50% chance it's been languishing at some repair shop for nearly 12 years, and I am currently trying to find pictures of the window sticker with the VIN so I can run a more advanced search than just Carfax.

I kinda think not re NC. My friend moved there from MA and her Tacoma frame rotted in the 12 year timeframe, IIRC she had to explain that all to the dealer there because they didn't think it counted in NC

My in-laws' house, same thing. 3 acres of land, it's a good sized house but developers would ring the bell and try to buy it. I'm sure they would just chop up the lot, demo the house, build 3-4 more instead and make a mint off of it

It happens, my parents are the type who don't really care about radios since my mom listens to talk radio if anything, as does my dad. Dad had a 1984 Chevy Citation when I was a teenager that had the sideways radio, AM only.

Re the last paragraph, when I did building maintainence in my 20s the management company who owned several properties in full or part and managed many others were loaded. If anyone remembers Grossman Lumber Company in MA, that's the family. One of the founders drove a beat up looking Dodge Aries/Plymouth Reliant station wagon with woodgrain decals. Just didn't care as long as it ran.

Or, maybe sometimes people spend so much on the vehicle they can't afford much for rent/mortgage..haha

But that was in the 1980s; Poor people these days seem to at least have cheap head unit with AUX input...

Generally yes. Though my wife's 2005 Rav4 didn't have an Aux or USB. Though it was fancy..tape deck AND CD player!
