Money is going to be one of the many concerns, the main one will be availability these days.

I build my first computer in 2019 under for around $1k and most of the components have doubled or tripled in price since then. I spent another maybe $1k in parts to upgrade it for more space and water cooling for better performance.

https://pcpartpicker.com/ will be your friend when checking compatibility.

I'd guess you'd want a multi core processor and a half decent GPU, an m.2 boot drive and 2TB or larger SSD for game storage

    We'll help you here!

Tools like these can help make sure you buy compatible parts.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/

    https://www.newegg.com/tools/custom-pc-builder

Look for deals right now. Certain parts are spendy.

Thanks! I had no actual educated guess on it, but hoped I'd be in the $1500 or less range by the end of it. Again, no actual direction here yet, but all I know for sure is I won't be skimping on storage, as that's one of my bigger issues with console currently.

PCPartPicker also has a section where folks can post their own builds with complete parts lists. That can be a great place to look for for inspiration and common parts. Most will include rational on why they picked parts, too. Their generic build guides are also pretty spot on for hitting price points.

Once you figure out what resolution you want to play on and how many frames you are looking to get I would start looking for a graphics card. Very hard to find at or close to msrp value right now

A pre build might be a decent option at the expense of customization but with the benefit of more availability

@scottstrong89 you just snagged a pretty sweet pre build, what were the deets on those?

Oh there will be some mods all right
You picked an awful time to get into PCs. If you would have asked this question like 3 years ago I would never have considered what I'm about to say but Nimble is right, a prebuilt will be your best bet right now.

    Yeah.
For a decent budget-friendly machine with quality components and good bang-for-the-buck performance, I'd say it starts about $1500, maybe a little less. From there, you are basically just deciding to spend more on CPU, GPU, memory, or storage capacity. Right now, though, it's hard to even find a GPU at regular prices. For a good gaming machine, expect to pay as much for the graphics card as you did for all the other components. Seems to help if you are near a Microcenter, which I am not.

Not including monitor or other peripherals.

I'd consider doing NZXTs BLD program if you're a first time builder. You pay a premium but they send you everything with assembly instructions and handle any warranty concerns.

I posted previously that I had bought a replacement 750W PSU to hopefully fix this problem. Unfortunately the PSU did not fix it. Last night the PC restarted twice while playing Borderlands 2. Both times it black screened for about 5-10 seconds, total system lockup, then rebooted itself.

Where do I go from here in the diagnostic process?

Check Windows Event Viewer. Lots of tutorials out there. Look for what happens at the exact time your crash happens.

You replaced a 750w with a 750w, PC specs? You may need more wattage, are you using a UPS/power conditioner? Could be dirty power protection.
