Ever driven down a road in broad daylight and struggled to see what's left of the lines? Or a road that's been patched 72 times and looks like it was pieced together like a puzzle? Well AI is not intelligent/intelligence. It's a pattern recognition algorithm. It does not ponder or troubleshoot. It only does what it's programmed to do. So when it gets to those messed up areas it might not know what to do. This is where Tesla's usually give a warning to the driver signalling it needs their input.

And that programming has to account for situations resembling the Trolley Problem, which also includes the driver's wellbeing (i.e. smash into tree vs pedestrians)...

No worries, nobody says you have to do autopilot. The article's only mention of changes to infrastructure was a mention of replacing stop lights being with radios. I've never seen that anywhere else, which makes me think this author was making stuff up. Even if they did come up with a standard for radio controlled intersections it would be a simple matter to add them to exiting stop lights.

I post here because EV forums can be a bit of an echo chamber. TBF its an echo chamber here too, but the echos sound different. I like my thinking to be challenged and that doesn't happen in echo chambers.

    Same here, no highway autopilot.
Its a control thing and for some people, autopilot is needed as they are terrible drivers or completely clueless.

Currently Tesla AP is centered around demographics and who can afford or wants to afford a Tesla - I have neither the time or inclination for that crap.

And one word (not based on fear, but you can take it for what it is):

"Tesla’s autopilot, for example, is typically seen as level 2 to 3 automation because it can take control of at least two functions such as steering and acceleration, but still needs the driver to monitor the car and its environment. These levels of transition actually pose many of the biggest challenges for the technology."

I know auto pilot is coming, but it's not going to be the norm for a while. Auto pilot in planes has been around for some time, but pilots are highly trained for it, and the tech is state of the art. The tech now in cars still requires an "attentive driver". There are enough people driving now that aren't paying a lick of attention behind the wheel. I can envision Joe Autocar going down the road munging down on a double cheeseburger, playing with his phone thinking the car will deliver him without a scratch. If the car gets in a crash and Joe is severely injured or killed, the family will sue for a couple mil because the car didn't do its job. It's going to take a while, but yes someday it could cut down on wrecks....maybe.

Horse and buggy actually has pretty good autopilot. Arguably better than Tesla's.

And what level of automation do you think airplanes are? They have no obstacles to avoid, and above 28,000 feet they are REQUIRED to run with autopilot "because of requirements for Reduced Vertical Separation Minima — the rule that allows planes to fly with just a 1,000-foot vertical separation." In other words Anywhere under 28k they are not allowed to get more than 1,000 feet of other planes, with autopilot that distance is apparently reduced. Really though autopilot in airplanes is closer to cruise control. Meanwhile hop on youtube and see the raw stream of data that Teslas are actively processing, it makes a plane autopilot look rudimentary.

Tesla's autopilot is averaging 1 wreck per 4,140,000 miles driven. That's more miles than most will drive in their lifetime X2-4. So yeah already cutting down on wrecks.

And people already are trying to sue. That's why there are warning popups when you enable it. It's why there are warning labels on ladders saying you may fall down from a height if you climb it, and warnings on Subway's sandwich wrappers saying not to eat the paper the sandwich is wrapped in. There always has been idiots in the world, and there likely will always be while civilization still exists. So we can either remove them all, or we can remove their ability to affect other's lives. So we can watch them choke on the wrapper, take time out of our lives to save them while they're choking, or put warning labels on them and hope they're smart enough to read. Yes they may still see the warning, and commit stupid anyways. And the suing comes inevitably after that, but that's where the judges are supposed to save everyone's time and money by saying "there was a warning, he was an idiot and ignored it, case dismissed"

I mean teslas crash into parked vehicles, horses run your ass right off literal cliffs. I'd call it a draw. Think i'd still take the one with the climate control though.

I had a 250 honda elite. It would do 95mph on the freeway and even had a built in factory stereo. Paid $400 for, drove it home at 11pm, 2 lane highway, highway patrol behind me for 10 MILES, tags 4 years out of date. Didn't get pulled over. Also cost $65 a year to insure. 175 for total coverage. So it did have it's benefits. Also was GREAT for darting around town to grab food or parts while working on the truck. No shifter means you can ride with a drink in your hand.
