The Tacoma is 2nd best used midsize pick up

If it comes reasonably equipped including awd for $30k, then the Maverick will be stealing sales from the more expensive (and likely more profitable) Ford Ranger. However with no similar sized or priced competition, I assume Ford also expects to be stealing sales from Colorado, Canyon, Tacoma, Gladiator.

 

The base FWD hybrid could be stealing from things like mid trims of Corolla, Civic etc. If I was looking at one of those and compared pricing with the maverick, I think I'd go with the cool little truck instead.

 

I just built one with off road package and larger wheels/tires and ecoboost engine for 33k. Not bad.

 

I really think Ford has a hit here. But I think you are right -- they are not looking to steal sales from the Tacoma, etc. They have said openly that the Maverick is the truck for non-truck owners. I totally see the appeal. Lots of project people at Home Depot doing tons of DIY but no room to put all the stuff they need. The Maverick is the perfect around the town DIY / Project car.

Side note. Given that Ford is getting out of the sedan business, this is a good play for them.

Of course, they are playing in a very different market than the Tacoma -- that is where the Ranger is playing -- and not very well, I might add.

 

Looks like they are achieving just that! 2022 model year sold out. No more orders accepted.

I did find this concept Ridgeline, that would likely be a hot seller. Almost Hilux ish in looks

 

A few years ago when Ford announced they were leaving the Sedan portion of market l was surprised by all the negativity and doom from people, some were actually bat-shit crazy over the decision.

 

What’s crazy is that Honda has some awesome ATVs and dirt bikes. You would think they would know how to build a nice looking dirt truck or at least Baja/Rally styled truck. Instead of building modern versions of a Chevy Avalanche.

I thought it was sad to lose the Focus and Fiesta hatchbacks.

 

Remember the Toyota A-Bat from years ago. Hyundai already sort of beat them to the punch, but maybe Maverick will convince Toyota to build one.

I remember that hideous thing, it would be nice to see them convert the RAV4 Platform into a small truck to enter the compact category.
