I noticed that too. Looks like an extremely weak area.

This might be a dumb question but has everyone had shifting issues whenever they upsized tires. I had 33’s now 35’s and sometimes when it shifts, more so when cold it feels like it’s slipping where it revs really quick before it shifts. Did it both on 33’s and 35’s. I’ve been good at maintaining the fluid so I know it’s not that. I figured since I am still on stock gears till I save up for the new gears. It probably is screwing with the shift points. Has everyone on here for ecu tunes with the bigger tires and new gear ratio?

Sounds like you need gears. Probably gear searching.

Yeah that’s what I figured. I’ll see how it is after I put the new gears in. Just curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

I had some odd issues a couple times before I flushed out my atf. I don’t know if it was a fluke but It stopped happening but I wasn’t sure if it was from the fluid flush. I ran stock gears with 285s and 315s with no real issue though.

Does the rev happen in lower gears? When I had the few odd moments, they were 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Almost like if you rev hung and dumped the clutch on a manual between shifts.

Yes actually. I just had my ECU flashed by @JustDSM. On 35's and 4:56 and was experiencing a similar complaint. So far I'm a fan but it's only been a couple of days.

I mean it is entirely possible the trans is hurt too. Beadlocks aren’t light nor are 35’s. That trans has been working like a dog to keep up and that’s not necessarily good.

Thanks guys. It’s typically when it’s cold from 3rd to 4th when I am easy on the throttle. If I am hard on the throttle or after it warms up from driving around a little it doesn’t do it. If I shift manually and don’t put it in overdrive it doesn’t do it. So I feel like it’s something weird with the shift points. I’ll have to change the gears first and see how it reacts. Then if I still have issues I will contact @JustDSM

I just went to 35s (315s) from 265s about 2 weeks ago and have not experienced the shifting issues. So maybe try the ATF as mentioned above? I do have gears on the way (YEAH!!) so looking forward to getting some pep back, and could probably use some better brakes, but overall the trans/shifting seemed pretty normal. I finally hit the dirt Saturday so I'll see what else I need to cut/hammer ...

Yeah that’s possible. I feel like if was that though it would happen more throughout driving and not be such a specific issue you know?

I have flushed my transmission twice, once when I bought it at 70k and recently at 105k after experiencing the issue. I do my drain and fills every 15k with my diffs. Probably overkill but I’m a believer overkill for maintenance. I have pulled quite a bit of trailers on my 33’s. Once across the country and back. But if the transmission took a dump on me I’d be pretty disappointed at 105k with the quality that toyota supposedly built a reputation for.

I don’t understand the whole big tires and no gears thing. Honestly mine being a 6spd should give it a solid edge over an auto. I HATED how sluggish it was even on 33’s and stock gears. Gears do so damn much. From making the truck work less, to better off-road abilities to better fuel economy. Should be step number one before tires/wheels.

Yeah I’ll own that mistake. It does drive pretty terrible with 35’s on stock gears. Gears are definitely on my urgent list

    Too many to remember
Just put the shifter in 4th and leave it there. When you put it in drive the trans hunts way more trying to optimize MPG

After driving my f150 with normal tires and stock gearing it became immediately clear just how dumb the taco trans is at shifting with 35’s and 4.88’s. It’s probably been that way it’s whole life but I haven’t had stock size tires in about ten years so who knows. Gears are a must, but shifting at higher rpm would be nice, too. I like being able to do that in the f150 with the sport/haul mode.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
Life is fine on 35s and 4.88s. The transmission/ECU needs to be tuned. Bully dog has a decent tune for trans (came with the supercharger) and I now run a custom tune which is even better from @JustDSM. Shifts are quicker, holds gears and does not hunt.
