This is not accurate at all, but...you have a point. For a Toyota, this is very early. Other than the A90 Supra and LFA, this is rare to see. These spy shots are endorsed by Toyota's marketing arm in this case. Save for the first set of actual spy shots from a casual observer on the freeway, it's been either Toyota tipping them off or simply parading the vehicle around, with pleasure and photographers are well informed where to spot them. Someone at Toyota wants people to see it testing, unlike most Toyota development programs hidden from view. You would easily be seeing the next generation Camry testing right now, as prototypes of that vehicle have been testing for a bit now. Where are they? Hidden on purpose, like most Toyota future models.

Now for my main gripe, no it is not "too early" for test mules. Not how that works at all. And no, that isn't a Tundra. Has Tundra panels, but that's a 920B mule. I've asked and yes it is. Obvious to everyone, hence being reported as such. Eventually that 920B mule will become the production sheetmetal, running about. I haven't really bothered to look real closely, because after 8 months, prototypes of the real thing should be ready by now. Toyota likely will hide those at closed sites, while trotting out these mules in Tundra skin until sometime in late 2022 before reveal.

Toyota began testing mules, wearing the production front and rear skins of the 2022 Tundra in late 2018 and got caught on camera in January 2019. Remained that way, until November 2020 when spy shots of the real Tundra were deliberately put into public rotations, to be "caught" on camera. Reveal came 6 to 9.5 months later.

I think it's been covered on here enough to say its definitely going to be 2024.

 

The loooong Tacoma product cycle is both good and bad. Good because the trucks can last that long... but bad like in my case, there is no imperative for me to upgrade from a 2nd gen to the current 3rd gen which I find lacking in the powertrain department... and the other 3rd gen updates don't get you much beyond what I have done to mine in the aftermarket. So I am looking at the new Tundras and really like them, but I don't really need a full size truck and the MPG, while better than the outgoing Tundra, is still not good enough for me to be happy using one as my DD. But not sure I can wait for 2024 MY if that's when the new Tacoma drops. Sheesh. Toyota releasing new gen vehicles is like a sloooow drip.

I like it a helluva lot more than the tundra. I hope the real one is hybrid and at least more like this than just a smaller tundra nose.

The 3rd Gen powertrain will be worth its weight in gold versus the upcoming Turbo-4. Turbos just add another (unnecessary) layer of complexity to ICE. May as well wait for the full EV.

 

Agreed with both statements. I like the smooth feel of the 3rd gen vs my old 2nd gen but miss the feel under the pedals from my 2nd gen. This is nitpicky but I’d rather have those differences vs. the issues that might come with the turbo. (They always do)

 

While I do agree that turbos add more complexity to an internal combustion engine, toyota is certainly not new to it. In the Toyota pickup (before it became the tacoma) pre 1995, they had a 22re turbo 4 cylinder that I believe was super reliable.

I would most likely pick that engine over the 3rd gen engine. Rumors are it will be the 2.4 engine used in the lexus nx350 which has around 270 hp and 315 torque. Sounds much better to me. I will take the slightly less hp and more (useable torque) any day of the week.

The side window looks pretty nice and the windshield angle is OK and looks to have a round steering wheel.
