I think our E-shop guys have some instruments they can use and turn the motor shaft by hand to help them figure out wiring for proper rotation. They always do a un-coupled bump check anyway.

 

Most motor replacement jobs still involve me just because machinist used to do all the alignments. One of the things I try to determine is if the outgoing motor has the hold down bolts slotted. Many times we have to slot the hold down bolt holes so the motor isn't bolt bound come alignment time. Sometimes we get lucky and whatever it is being aligned to can be moved a little bit to get alignment in spec. Then, from experience have to be careful of not binding internals of a pump or excessive pipe strain. The motor base pictured looks like it has two options for moving.

 

Even when I break out the coupling alignment tools some of the young guys look at me like I’m from Mars. I don’t need no battery operated gadgets. Best way is the way I’m used to doin’ it.

Things are absurd sometimes at my work. On 1,800 RPM needs to be .003" angular and .002" offset, 3,600 RPM is .002" and .001" no exceptions. What's seems crazy is that years ago a straight edge probably be sufficient. What gets me is the dose (radiation) we might get aligning to that criteria for a pump that might run 5 minutes once a week.
