11.5 mpg normal?

I have a 2022 tacoma trd offroad with no mods and I have averaged 11.5 mpg in the first 1000 miles. I have driven it gently with mostly local trips minimal freeway. I know I did not buy a Prius and did not buy the Tacoma for awesome gas mileage but I did expect at least something close to sticker projections.

My question is, should I be concerned and contact the dealer. My old Tundra V8 got better MOG than this with my same driving habits. Before I try other things (Tune, exhaust, intake, etc.), is there anything dealer can check or do?

 

If I was you, I'd contact the dealer. Something doesnt seem right, thats real low.

 

Are you going by what the screen tells you or are you calculating it when you fill up? If your getting 11.5mpg then you have filled your tank about 5 times already.

 

Something is up with that. My 19 has gotten 19/24 since I brought it home. Even trailing, it gets 15 or so.

 

1. Driving mostly city will lower your mpgs
2. Driving like grandma will lower your mpgs
3. Your truck is learning your driving habit and it’s too soon to tell how high or low you’re actually getting. Wait 5k miles then report back.

 

Location plays a big part in it. How you drive an even bigger one. If you are in a hilly envioronment, head winds, weather etc etc... it could be. Especially if you are heavy footed. But no, 11.5 is drastically low. That's like ECT mileage uphill both ways in a hurricane, lol... and I'm lifted with heavy tires.

 

Loc trips in cold weather can really kill mileage if truck never really warms up. Heck my Corolla in the winter gets way worse than in summer by about 10mpg as my trips are so short it never really warms up

 

I am in San Diego, I do not drive like a grandma. My pumps at the military base shut off at $70 so I have only filled up completely once but I have been to the pump more than 5 times. I have not calculated manually just staring at the computer in front of me. I will call the dealer and start manually calculating myself when I fill up next. Either way, I think it is crazy low.

 

Overreacting. 1000 miles isn’t much. Give it time.

 

I found the mpg shown on the info screen is low on mine also because it's trying to calculate the tank mpg. Mine seems closer to what I really get when I check the screen after turning it off before I open the door. It's usually higher because it's just counting the trip.

 

Thanks for all the comments. I just wanted to hear opinions before I go to the dealer. I agree 1000 miles is not a lot of a sample size.

 

Going to a dealer this early will be a waste of time for everyone honestly, and they’ll remember you as a Karen who bought a truck for gas mileage. Wait til 5k. If your computer shows that low at that point, going to the dealer is not frowned upon.

 

Do a fill up and calculate manually. Somethings wrong, either with the engine components or the calculated mileage. Then it’s take it to the dealer time with your results. It’s not “learning” at 11.5mpg even for the first 1000 miles.

 

11.5 is way too low even if you have a heavy foot in the city. Like said above, don’t rely on the dash utility. Calculate it yourself.

 

I would check mileage yourself by doing your own calc. 11.5mpg is good, if you have a dump truck.

Mine is averaging 19mpg in 90% city driving.

At 1k miles my truck was average 16.7mpg which is nearly the same as it is now at 15k miles. Distance driven since new shouldn’t play a part in fuel economy.

 

I was getting 18mpg when I bought my first one, when to 22 after a couple Months of the same commute.

New one was 17mpg when it started then went to 25 after a year.

 

It's enough man. There would/should not be that much of a difference.

 

Hey man if you are getting 11.5 on really short trips it is normal.
If i drive down to the bank and come home its shit mpg. If you’re getting 11.5 mpg cruising 65 on the highway with a stock truck then id be concerned.
Short trips the truck chugs gas, long trips, normal throttle i was getting about 18.5 when it was stock
