I just started working out with my buddy here at college and im doing it all, upper and lower body plus cardio....ive lowered my calorie intake and drink nothing but water, and maybe an iced tea here or there... My question is, since i am kinda chubby, well no im chubby lol no way around it...is it okay to drink some kind of protein shake....if yes can you guys recommend one that actually kind of tastes good so i dont dread drinking it??

Look at BSN Syntha-6 or Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein.
Syntha-6 is the best tasting shake on the market.
Both are low in fat and calories, but high in protein and fiber.
If anyone tells you not to take protein, don't listen. Protein will not make you fat- it simply is food for your muscles. Hope that helps.

Hell yes take a protein shake!!! It will help you produce more fat burning muscle. The best tasting one I've tries was pro 5. Actually by far the best tasting protein shake. Google it and read up on it!

as long as you plan on working out, any protein will be good for building muscle. to cut weight, cut out carbs as well (potatoes, noodles, bread, etc) i've lost 10lbs in 1.5 weeks just by eating better.

The Chocolate ones and Cookies and Cream are pretty good. If you mix it with milk you will drink it for the taste.

Yeah...it still tastes pretty good with water alone. Just mix one scoop with however much water (or milk) the instructions say, shake well, and enjoy.

If you want a real treat, you can make it in a blender with yogurt, fruit, ice cubes, peanut butter- whatever you want really.

Noooo way. If you are going to take it once a day, take it after a workout- but try and take it 3 hours before you eat a meal again. The protein takes time to break down in your system. I take one with breakfast, and one after I get done working out (usually around 4 pm). Taking it before, during and after a workout will make you go through the product like crack, and you will crap most of it out.

K first of if you want to cut some weight you actually need to drink alot of water, at least a gallon a day, and you need to make sure you eat. Cutting/counting calories is not going to do anything if the remainder of the calories you intake are from crap food. Check out the paleo diet. theres alot of good info on the web about it. will change your life! no joke.

    Hey Dude -

    Two things:

    1) Protein shakes, in my opinion, are a waste of money. If you focus on eating clean (lots of vegetables, lean meat, nuts, small amount of fruit, and little to no dairy or carbs) you will notice an immediate impact on your physic, mood, and energy level.

A good place to get diet / recipe ideas from is here: www.spokaneprimal.com. It's a website run by a good friend of mine whose also a trainer certified in a bajillion different areas . It's primarily built around a paleo-style diet (i.e. eat like we were meant to eat) with variations and tips / tricks to get over eating like shit (which most people do). Here is his gym website for other ideas: http://anvilathletics.wordpress.com/what-we-do/snapshots/videos/

    2) Use your school gym but stay away from machines (except for treadmill) and focus on free weights / dynamic movements. Your best bet is to start stealing workout ideas from here: www.crossfit.com. The more you focus on varied, dynamic, high impact workouts, the stronger you will get and the quicker you will see results. Seriously - sign up for the message board there or just poke around.

For reference (so I'm not just some random crackpot spweing bullshit on a message board):

    - I played college football so I am ungodly familiar with tradition training / diet methodologies.
    - I've been training with crossfit for two years now and it's a night vs day difference compared to where I was in college.
    - I am now a trainer here: www.kravmagaspokane.com

Protein shakes are just - meh. They're not a subsitute for a proper diet and depending on whether or not you have a gluten allergy (we all do) and how allergic you are to dairy, well, there's just a whole host of issues associated with them.

Good luck with the working out. Check out Crossfit.com or your local Crossfit gym (not trying to sell you anything) for some awesome, and truly painful workouts. Honestly, just getting off the couch, and away from TW is a step in the right direction.

I guess I'm not qualified to be a online forum nutrition advocate- guess that dream will have to be scrapped too.
