Everything came off my Samurai, both axles with lockers, shocks, leaf springs, brake lines, drive shafts, high steer, missing links, like new wheels and tires and it has already been modified to fit a Samurai so it is all bolt on. This will be an easy build.

    Greetings Bama!

No, I’m not from Alabama, but I can’t get enough of Desoto State Park, Little River Canyon, Lake Guntersville and a few other places in Alabama.

Although I live in Texas, I go on camping trips in Alabama at least twice a year. I’ve been doing that for probably 25 years. North Alabama is awesome!

Oh, I have. I always add Cloudland Canyon to my North Alabama trips. Blue Ridge, Jasper, Blood Mountain, Tullulah Falls and several other parts of North Georgia are great places too.

We don’t have anything, in East Texas, like that.

DRY WEATHER CONTINUES: Temperatures are mostly in the 20s over the northern half of Alabama this morning, but we expect a nice warm-up today. With a partly to mostly sunny sky, temperatures reach the mid 50s in most places this afternoon. The average high for Birmingham on January 27 is 55.

Clouds return to the state tomorrow as a cold front passes through. Low levels will remain dry, and no rain is expected with the front. Colder air begins to arrive as temperatures will hold in the 40s over North Alabama during the day.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The sky will clear tomorrow night, and by daybreak Saturday temperatures will drop into the 18-23 degree range over the northern half of the state. Saturday will be a sunny, cold day with a high between 37 and 42 degrees. Then, on Sunday, after a low in the 20s temperatures rise into the 50s by afternoon with a good supply of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be dry and pleasant Monday and Tuesday with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. Then, unsettled weather is likely over the latter half of the week with the approach of a slow moving cold front. Some thunderstorms will be possible, but too early to know if severe storms will become an issue. Colder air will likely return by Friday or Saturday (February 4/5)… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: On January 27, 1940 Alabama was locked in a severe cold wave. The snow came on the 23rd and 24th. There was more than a foot in parts of North Alabama. One inch fell as far south as Montgomery.Bitter, bitter cold followed the snow.

At Birmingham Airport, the temperature dropped to 8 below on the 27th. The city was covered with 7 inches of snow. There was ice skating on the Black Warrior River at Birmingport with ice on the river four inches thick. The ice was seven inches thick on creeks running into the river. The Cullman area was very hard hit by the unusually severe winter storm. Over a 13-inch blanket of snow the Cullman temperature plunged to a bitter 16 below zero. Anniston was buried under an 11-inch blanket of snow.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Bitter cold air gripped most of Alaska during January 1989. Tanana, near Fairbanks, saw a low temperature of 76 degrees below zero on this day. The high for the day was 60 degrees below zero. With an average temperature of 68 degrees below zero, Tanana saw an average temperature of nearly sixty degrees below normal. McGrath, Alaska, recorded a wind chill of -100°F. This is the lowest wind chill ever observed in the U.S. at a populated location

COLD FRONT: Today will be a mostly cloudy day across Alabama as a cold front passes through the state. Once the front passes this afternoon, north winds of 12-22 mph will bring in some of the coldest air we have experienced so far this season. Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s this afternoon, and with a deep upper trough with very cold air aloft overhead a few snow flurries or snow showers are possible across Northeast Alabama, despite a dry airmass.

The best chance of seeing a few snow flakes is north and east of Birmingham; no accumulation or impact is expected with temperatures generally in the mid to upper 30s and a gusty north wind. The big story is the cold air; with a clearing sky temperatures will drop into the 17-24 degree range over the northern half of the state early tomorrow, with a wind chill index between 8 and 18 degrees. Tomorrow will be a sunny day with a high in the 37-42 degree range.

Then, on Sunday, after a low in the 20s temperatures will rise into the 50s by afternoon with a sunny sky.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be dry and pleasant Monday and Tuesday with highs at or just over 60 degrees. Rain returns to the state Wednesday as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico surges northward. Then, a cold front will roll through the state Thursday with more rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Global models are in better agreement, and for now the risk of severe storms looks low. In fact, we might see a few snow flakes on the back side of the departing system Thursday night. Friday will be cold and dry… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 2014: Snow amounts of 2-4 inches were forecast across the southern half of Alabama, where a winter storm warning was in effect. Some snow was in the forecast for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden, but nothing more than a “dusting” with no travel impact.

It was a forecast that we wish we could take back. Instead of a dusting, amounts of 1-2 inches were common across the I-20/59 corridor. Much of the snow melted initially due to warm soil, but the air temperatures were in the 17-20 degree range as the snow fell, and the snow melt quickly turned into ice. A flash freeze event; something rarely seen in Alabama. Roads were soon ice covered, and as people left work early to get home, gridlock followed, and a nightmare now known as “snowmageddon”. Alabama State Troopers responded to 731 vehicle accidents across the state during the period Tuesday through Friday (Jan 28th-31st). Sadly, there were nine deaths attributed to accidents that occurred due to the icy road conditions. Some people were stranded on highways for over 10 hours; many took shelter in stores, gas stations, and restaurants.

In schools, teachers spent the night with, and looked after, their students whose parents were not able to pick them up and take them home. On those ice covered highways, drivers got out of their cars to give other cars a nudge up the hill, and Good Samaritans came to the rescue in their four-wheelers. Some restaurant workers brought food and hot coffee to stranded motorists. One neurosurgeon, Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw, was at Brookwood Medical Center when he was needed for emergency brain surgery at Trinity Medical Center on Montclair Road. He would walk six miles to save the patient’s life.

It was the second worst forecast bust in my career, topped only by the January 1982 ice storm, which started 8 hours before the forecast time and brought catastrophic impact to the state.

Got the uppers tacked on last weekend, got some PVC for some test links, and the correct lower brackets should be arriving today. Hopefully I’ll be cycling and ordering coilovers next week.

No doubt! I cut way more than I needed to clear them before going LT. Got a ton of space now.
