Was told dealer can't do factory order for 2022 TRD Pro

Not sure if any dealers are on this forum, but trying to uncover the truth. I went to a dealer and stated I wanted to do a factory order for a 2022 TRD Pro and no not in the lime color. I was told they can not do a factory order. Is this true or false?

I've heard this with previous Pro's but also seems like some people are able to specify. Have you checked other dealers? With regards to not being able to specify color, I heard you basically put your order in and they call you when a pro comes in regardless of color and ask if you want it or not.

Mine was sitting on the showroom floor for like 3 days before I found it...I feel like they usually have enough come in that you wouldn't have an issue if you keep your eyes open on local inventory unless you're looking for a manual.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will take them. I am just surprised as they hand these models out to Auto Reviewers on YouTube like they are cotton candy, but a paying customer can not get one. I mentioned not wanting the lime color as I know that might be in demand. But the Pro is on the Toyota website configurator. They advertise them in print and on TV. There is no mention of limited availability, the trucks are not labeled 1-1000 like some limited production Shelby Cobra's in the past. I want to spend money, but no one wants the cash, what kind of fk'ed up business model is that?

There is no such thing as a factory order. Toyota decides how many of each model they make, in what color, trim, options etc. and then they allocate these to dealers. There are some options that can be changed after factory shipment, pretty limited. Dealers can trade if you tell your dealer what you want, but in the end you can just cast a wide net with your search and find what you want as close to home as you can.

It is silly. Honestly though too, unless you're absolutely dead set on the color, all the pros are the same. You could also wait until 2023 when in theory, the lime green would be available on a TRD Off Road and you could save some money and just do suspension, grill, and skid plate. Another note is that even if you were able to order it, that doesn't explicitly insulate you from the dealer markup. Luckily I got my dealer to waive the markup they originally had but I think the lowest markup I've seen is $5k if you're lucky. I could never get on board with spending ~$52k+ on a $47k truck...some people have more money than sense.

When I was looking for a Sport in Inferno, the best any dealer could do was find one where they could try and request a dealer trade. I was finally able to secure one but it was a waiting game.

Our dealer last year got 13 pros. They had 40 people put down a deposit. Who gets one is done by lottery.
May the odds be ever in your favor.

Interesting, just seems strange to me that Toyota does not want to sell as many as they can, which BTW would be a low number anyway in the sense that some people do not want to spend that much or they want to do their on build or they just want another model. So at the end of the day they impact customer sat and do not sell as many trucks as they could, crazy business practices no matter how you try and frame it. But at least with a lottery I have a chance. No lottery, probably not....

Have you asked yourself if there’s any reason why Toyota might not have manufactured as many trucks as it would have liked in 2021?

The Toyota North America CEO won’t return my calls so I don’t have a number, but I thought the entire world knew Toyota didn’t deliver as many Tacomas as they intended to in 2021. Anyone who doesn’t know why has been living in a cave.

They should be able to put you on a waiting list, but that could've changed recently with shortages. And when I say recently, I mean like this month. Subaru came out publicly saying they are cutting production and Toyota won't be far behind if they have not already. But, what I suspect the dealer is actually doing... is trying to sell you something quicker they can see already built and ready to ship. Don't take the bait. If you want a pro, wait for it. Find another dealer if need be.

That's pretty shitty. I'd be salty af if I put in for it a year ago and some asshat who just put in a request a month ago got it. I don't believe this is good business practice. I'd also like some proof they do that. Who would be dumb enough to put a deposit down for that kind of que? Because they do require a "deposit" even if it's a refundable $500. You could wait 5 years and still never get one. I don't believe it. Maybe they sold you snake oil and got you in a truck quick.

North of the border here in Canada you can still find them. although the only ones that i have found so far unspoken for are Electric Lime Green and auto, no manuals. Msrp for one here is 59,800 plus a block heater and freight and delivery plus a few small fees total is $62,228 now add 12% tax. An OR DCSB is $47,868 and an OR premium is $50,868. So a pro is $14,360 more then an OR and $11,360 more then an OR Premium. They went up about 3.5k from last year while all other are up about 1k. for me the best value for us up here is a Sport DCSB premium 6MT for $48,768. we cant get and OR manual up here. Only available in a sport premium. also Lunar Rock and Windchill pearl are only available in premium. i thought about a Pro for a bit. drive it for a year and sell, but now that Tacoma's are made in Mexico Canadian Tacoma's are harder to export south because of the tariff on them.

You might think about whether it’s possible for Toyota to have sold more Tacomas in 2021 than in 2020 and still have cut production in the latter half of 2021 due to supply chain issues. Hint: they aren’t mutually exclusive.

Maybe I have to lay it out? Let’s say you produced 100 widgets in 2020 and the widgets have gotten super popular. So you plan to produce 150 widgets in 2021. But only produce 140. Magically you have exceeded 2020 production despite having had to cut production.

Cracks me up that people pay so much ($8-10k) for the PRO over the OR.

with that much extra cash I could make the OR better than the Pro (which I did) and still have almost $4k to invest and double my $ (which I did) :D

Personally preference really. I did the same as you, but some just want a pro and don't plan on doing anything to it. No different than someone getting a Challenger SRT vs getting an R/T. They could put money in that R/T and have it crush any stock SRT all day, but do they want to? It also brings the question of their use for it. Someone might get that SRT and it sits as a collectors piece. We see it all the time with previous gen models across the board. Someone just likes it and they baby it. It's all personal preference man. What works for your vehicle budget might be someone else's friday night out and they are not worried about saving $4k through doing their own modding.
