Most domestic manufacturers of the day offered two engine families, small block and big block. The larger engines typically were targeted at larger, heavier cars.

The reason behind this is that the internal parts of the engine - crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons get too big for the small block casting.

In these families there were different displacements offered. In the case of Oldsmobile (Gen 2 1964-90) the small blocks were 260, 307, 330, 350, 403. The big blocks were 400, 425, 455.

You can see that the biggest small block is slightly larger than the smallest big block, the 400 big block would be larger and heavier and also stronger than its 403 small block brother.

An exception to the small block/big block was AMC.
    All the 1966 and up V8s were physically the same size and bolt right in - 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401.

Ok. I get it now. I couldn't understand what I thought was an oxymoron.

I assume the only real difference was piston size?

The bore and also the stroke which means different crankshafts and connecting rods.
AMC used "lean manufacturing" far earlier than the other domestics.
On the other hand Ford in 1970 had 5 different families of V8 engines.

my dad has a 69 Camero RS completely torn apart and buried in his garage. Been there since my brother was born in 1988. Some day it will get worked on. Has everything for it but always works on something else.
