Stuck at Crossroad: Solid axle front 3rd gen

Just mount the axle further behind the oil pan. It will work just as good back that far as it would clear in the back where it belongs.

The oil pan is a non-issue with 12” of lift. It’s not like you need suspension travel.

Major vehicle safety issues come from the “safety triangle”. You know, steering, suspension, braking. Eliminate all three, and the chances of failure are gone as well.

For a couple of experienced fab guys you sure seem to be missing the most simple solution to your problem.

Just cut 4 feet out of each side of the frame and mount a hydraulic cylinder on each side. Set up the control to extend one side and contract the other when pushed forward and the opposite when pulled back. Position the cylinders so the truck flexes at the cab/bed junction.

So we decided to take up this project because we want to lift my friends truck up 12inches and its a lot easier to do that with 2 solid axles rather than an IFS.

We thought about it and him being a talented fabber/welder and me being me, we could tackle this project pretty well.

We located a totaled tacoma and we're able to get the guy to just sell us the rear axle it seemed to be intact.

Donor truck:

They sent us the rear axle, we made some measurements and we were happy that we could easily weld some mount to the top and line those mounts up to the shock mounts that come stock so we could do coils in the front instead of leafs.

We started by removing the tires and brakes and steering knuckles as well as the tie rods and LCAs. We did it carefully so they would be preserved and sold.

Now for the fun part, we decided to cut off the front bracket where the LCAs attache to the frame. We cut it off at the mounts because because that would give us extra space to work with.

This is where it got tricky. We started retrofitting certain components like the mounting brackets for the brake lines etc, when we realized that there's no spot for the power steering fluid line to hook up. Thats when we started to come to the frightening realization that the wheels on this damn thing won't turn!

Now I know some of y'all have done this, so I would really appreciate some advice or even help with this; how do you get the wheels to turn on this damn axle?

I suggest a single coil spring at the centre, some ropes with pulleys and then when you turn the steering wheel the axle will pivot at the centre spring. As a bonus, the articulation in the front will be absolutely incredible. Like those kids rides in the park, mounted on coil springs. The downside will be the bump steer. That might be bad.

Locate a solid axle from a Land Cruiser. It will have the knuckles. This will save your knuckles.

My old jeep had those. It was a two wheel drive Kaiser mail keep converted to a sand buggy and a Chevy 350. Had 2 speed power glide and paddles on the rear. Tractor brakes were the only way to turn it quickly. I need to find a pic of it as that was 40 years ago

This is what were going with.

@ALI3N_123 and will be getting back to work tomorrow. We had a busy day working on it today so we werent really able to get on. Truck is looking solid.

We see the light at the end of the tunnel for his 2022 TRD Sport with a front E-locker.
