Ultimate Shear (when it breaks) = 0.5 x ultimate tensile (when it breaks in tensile)
    Ultimate tensile for a grade 2 5/16 UNC = 3900 lbs
Shear strength = (ballpark it) 2000 lbF, a shade under (1950)

Ideally you can find what Ariens says the shear strength needs to be for their pins, but they appear to specifically not give that out so that....3 finger bill can't have direct correlation to use some generic hardware.

    upload_2022-1-28_11-44-57.jpg

Looking here it looks like the shear points are the same as the thread minor diameter, which is a 5/16 UNC thread, and these are Grade 2 steel.

So - what you'll want is a fully threaded bolt:

    like this:
    images_e45b7030d14e1f775247725199a53dae5ddabc1b.jpg

    Not this:
    images_9d1730705b441d462541ef38a03e948dc7f002f0.jpg

since that shank at the top might be able to hold more than OEM designs.

So - Grade 2 fully threaded bolt, 5/16 UNC let 'er rip!

Finger limit: 4 and above, with a total of 7 or more between both hands.

One of the first lessons working with equipment, don't put your fingers anywhere you wouldn't put your 'man bits'. I worked for a farmer who almost lost his whole arm in a tractor PTO, couldn't imagine going through that.

So Old 3-Finger Bill might know what he's talking about. Or at least has gained enough experience to back up his assumptions.

If you're a big fan of the shocker, then there could be an argument for losing that digit that you'd traditionally have folded down during said act. But that is a level of commitment not many likely have.

    I have a Simplicity I got in 2014, thing is a beast.

Looking at the bolt it almost looked like the top head and the part below the bar just rusted out, I don't recall hitting anything. The other one looks rusty but damn if I am going to fiddle with it now unless it does break.

My buddy's son left a white kitchen bag of frozen dog shit near his walkway several years ago.
He grenaded the snow blower when he sucked it in.
    Exploded gears type of damage.

Bought 3 packs of shear pins at Lowes yesterday. Replaced the shoes on the Ariens before the storm, impact wouldn’t get the bolt off so I had to get the sawzall with a hacksaw blade. Crazy how these things wear so fast…D5F11A5B-2DBC-48A3-A0AB-F3876881ED58.jpg065B3265-EA24-400C-ABF5-6E51E3FF49F0.jpg

thought I’d be ok firing up the gene for just 2 seconds inside the barn to make sure it ran… old gas forgot to choke… had to leave the windows/doors open for half the day yesterday.

This might be the first snowstorm map where I am getting the lowest amount in the state. We have probably an inch so far and it's supposed to be mostly done by 4.

Hope you guys bought all the perishable foods. That's key when there could be extended loss of power and subsequent loss of refrigeration.

Have you looked outside? Refrigeration as far as your eyes can see! I just want to keep power as otherwise I don’t know how to keep the nuggets occupied for the next 48 hours.
