How expensive is it to fix intentional key damage to paint on a tailgate?

How about you try to the best of your ability ("FREE'') to buff it out. If it doesn't work on the first attempt, REPEAT, hell you bought the shit already. Maybe its 2 heinekens time wise. Then being that its on the rear of the truck ,you don't see it all the time. You don't necessarily have to get it repaired by a pro right now. Get yourself on firmer financial ground, and then get it fixed if it still bothers you. Do try to insure yourself better. It's important.One question , Was she hot?

Exactly! People that tell others "its just a truck, drive it!" or "it will buff out!" dont know the sentimental value or hard work that people have gone through to buy these things. This was my first truck, I saved up money for years working in inbound sales + retention for one of America's most hated cable tv companies getting yelled at by customers every day to purchase the truck by myself through hard work with a job that paid $12 + commission an hour that I was making at the time that I got the truck and its already paid off, it costs me around $37-38k (after tax) when I purchased it which was 3/4 of my annual earnings at the time of purchase. I tried to take care of the truck as much as I could to conserve it in like new condition for as long as possible, avoiding parking near the entrances of stores where shopping carts and bad drivers tend to be more common, I always try to park in the end of the parking lots if I can avoid parking near other vehicles and only park near other vehicles when there are no other parking spaces available. I dont park like a douchebag, I stay within the lines and always try to park with a curve on my drivers side so that I dont have a vehicle on each side if someone decides to park next to me while im not around.

Last night when I saw the marks on my tailgate I tried to see if the key scratches would come off by rubbing them gently with my fingernails because I thought it might be some white marks or something but unfortunately the scratches catch my fingernail when I try to rub them off with the fingernails. The marks were white so it probably got the clear coat or primer but ill have to get it checked out by a local shop to see what they say.

Update: I just looked at the scratches this morning under the sunlight agian, yup its white scratches that catch the fingernails when I try to feel them with my fingernails.

It sucks that theres people out there that are so petty and toxic enough to do this to other people just going to work and trying to earn a living. I dont even know why they decided to go crazy and scratch up my trucks tailgate with their keys. At least if its around $500 the amount isnt too huge, thats like a week of pay for me and I needed to get some rock chips fixed on my tailgate anyway before the vandalizer keyed my tailgate.

I have some scratch repair + compound that I could try for the meantime I guess but intentional key damage that catches the fingernails is probably deeper than accidental pin stripes from trees.

Yeah sadly I do feel an indent when I run my fingernail across the scratches :-( it left some white marks all over the scratched areas too which I imagine is probably the primer or clear coat.

 

Have comprehensive coverage? It covers vandalism.

 

Did you not read the response about how the OP couldn't live with a buff out knowing that there was a scratch not repaired by repainting? OP didn't even want to give buffing a try first.

As for being a boomer, that would be my folks generation. I'm a realist and don't get all caught up with keeping my rigs pretty or treating them like a lover, I'd rather just use it as a tool.

 

Just sell it...it's done.

You can always change your deductible and then report. I'd take a look and see how much that would cost. Comprehensive most times is more important than collision. A collision is rare and other damage occurs more frequently. I totally understand living check to check. Cutting costs on these things can mean a lot month to month and sorry again this happened to you.

You got nothing to apologize for here. Just ignore the responses that don't want to help. Some and the suggestions of trying to fix it yourself are helpful, it's clear you understand that. It's just common around here to boast about their small peen syndrome and blame others instead of helping.

I'm a realist too... Resale because of this drops thousands. It's a pretty expensive tool. I did read it. Did you not read my response? It was a knee jerk reaction after emotions of being keyed. OP rechecked and confirmed it's deep. Now you sound pretty concerned about it for someone who's not so concerned.

 

From the pics it looks like most or all of the scratches will buff out. You can do this by hand, it will take just some elbow grease, so be patient.
NOTE: If the scratch is not all the way through the color coat it will buff out.
