How expensive is it to fix intentional key damage to paint on a tailgate?

This guy Montana_Actual, I agree with you, goodness gracious, I don’t even have words for this TOOL. I feel for the OP, not everyone has $40,000.00 to throw around along with the ability to immediately detach all emotional sentiment from their investment.
Yea it’s a truck, we get that guy but many of us take a great deal of pleasure in keeping our trucks looking good. Even if the the OP just needed to vent about his truck being keyed, this is the place to do it.

In 1983 which was the same year of the movie, I placed new bars of soap into a pillowcase. It worked well. I occasionally blurt some things out from my past and my much younger European wife just looks blankly at me.

Well, I know I'll never get in a bird with you guys again, lol. White knuckle af and all the 10th guys just falling asleep chillen...

Granted, it was a pretty steep incline to Pikes Peak compared to the fast pace time I flew in one in IRQ and never flew in one in AFG. But yep, training was fun in CO and you guys having our backs during route clearance was an eye opener. Most engineers will go a whole lifetime without firing their weapons... But if you're attached to 10th, you are gonna return fire.

I know right, people have no respect for other peoples property and feel entitled to cause damage to other peoples property for whatever reason. I will try to get the tailgate wrapped in Paint Protection Film if its possible after I get it repainted, it should help protect against rock chips as well from my neighbors when they mow their lawns.

I know some of you guys suggested those black wraps but personally if I have a Barcelona Red Taco (red is my favorite color) I wouldnt want to cover up the red with black.

Is it past the primer and down to exposed metal? If so I would be more concerned with flash rust at this point especially if your in Miami with all the salt and humidity

You would make a lot more in the long run if you invested that large sum into an index fund and paid the 3% apr on the loan over 5 years. buying outright cash is not the smart move, just a useless flex by throwing money at a depreciating asset. If you put 40k into the s&p 500 five years ago how much would you have now? A lot fucking more than you would have paid on that 3% apr, that is for damn sure.

My dash cam has adjustable sensitivity settings for the G-sensor. Mine is pretty sensitive on the highest sensitivity setting. I bumped into it once (hit it with my elbow) taking out my trash and that activated it. It's also been activated by strong wind and even a cat climbing on the truck. Not sure if it would have picked up something like being keyed, but they can be quite sensitive.

But it’s also his transportation. Either way you would need to purchase a vehicle. If it’s a cheap from Craigslist, it may be throwing money in the wind on something bound to fail. If you buy used from dealership, you would still be spending half that money on something without warranty.

Buying outright is no flex. Many people here do it, because as I said, it saves a lot in interest in the long run. Without a car payment, you can use what would be car payment money and put that into an account. The depreciation on a Tacoma is so minute.

Also with no car payment, you can qualify for larger loans for say…buying a house. Being able to purchase a home with more buying power will net you a place that will only continue appreciating in value.

To each their own, but it’s no use to others by berating them in their personal financial decisions. You can provide insight, but don’t be so rude about it.

Yeah im concerned about that too, it doesnt look like it went to the bare metal since the scratches were white but its probably better to get it fixed asap before it starts to rust.

If they're white that means they'll buff out. You're lucky. Seriously, use the Adams or Meguiar's I suggested earlier.

IMO, your only real options are having a detailer do a light cosmetic touching up or having the tailgate repainted. If you went the detailer route, they could probably give it a light wet sand and then buff it. Since you can feel the scratch, they won't be able to remove it completely; however, wet sanding should dull the sharpness of the scratch and make it a bit less noticeable. That's probably the cheapest route, but since Toyota paint is notoriously thin, there's a possibility that the detailer could burn through the clear coat. If that happens, you'll need to get it resprayed anyway. I'm not in the paint business, but I would think you could have the whole tailgate repainted for $350-500 ish (probably more in an expensive area), especially if you could remove the tailgate and leave it with the body shop. If it was me, I'd probably go the respray route. If you can't swing the expense, I'd throw a little wax over the spot for until you can afford to get it repainted.
