Cab holes

Doing some surface rust cleanup under the cab and noticed that some of these holes have a square of butyl (?) tape, but some have fallen off. Is this tape something I can find, or should I get some rubber plugs like in the second pic?

That is the back side of the Rocker panel correct

Being sealed just keeps the winter slop out of getting in and rusting.

@Jase , just curious if you sprayed any fluid film or rust inhibitor into those rocker panel holes before sealing them back up. And did you find good plugs or tape to fit or match the existing? Thanks.

The whole carpet in the previous Tacoma I owned was completely soaked one day so I thought my windshield was leaking pretty terribly since it was raining. A few days later I was under the truck and noticed all those butyl tabs were missing from the rocker panels and with the carpet rolled up inside the cab with a fan running to dry it out I could see daylight through those holes. Then the lightbulb went off. The day before the rain I took it through the car wash and got the undercarriage wash. Those tabs must've blown off and the water blasted right through to the interior. Major F-Up. Ended up selling that truck, needed frame work anyway.

A few of those tabs are missing on the "new" 2001 Double Cab I have now. Wondering the best way to address it. Pull them all, spray fluid film and re-plug? Or leave the ones that are there and just plug the missing ones...

I sprayed rustoleum rust converter inside. Thinking about doing CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor too. One roll was more than enough.

 

You’ve given me food for thought. I’ve been struggling with a wet floorboard from time to time since I’ve owned mine. Replaced floor plugs, sealed around the wiring harness in the firewall and checked all seals and still is wet sometimes. Not the ac drain either

Did this to my 03 last year. Replaced those square plugs with 3/4" round plugs from Amazon. After spraying Fluid Film inside the cavity first of course

 

The holes in mine weren’t all the same size, so I went with the tape.

 

i use rubber plugs off 2020-22 highlanders.. they fit these. a few removed during hitch install is how i acquired them.

just measure the hole and order some generic rubber plugs meant for a firewall or w/e. far better than the stock tape stuff
