Internet from cell tower

I am moving to a house where they offer verizon dsl but evidently they limit the number of subscribers for some reason, don't even know if verizon will allow me to transfer the current home owner over to me. Anyways doesn't verizon offer internet through their cell towers. I think I remember a verizon guy told me you can buy a receiver and put into my usb and I can surf the web. Have you all used this or at+t? Is it good, hate the thought of moving and having no internet..

 

Can't speak to the new 4G LTE upgrades (their latest network technology), but the tech that they've been using that you most likely heard about peaks at about 1 megabit per second, which translates to roughly 120KB per second. For reference, avatar pictures on TW are a max of 50KB in size. So, you could download 2 and a half avatar pictures from TacomaWorld per second on the 3G internet.

The cellular based internet is also somewhat pricey from what I've heard... You may want to look into satellite-based internet from HughesNet or DishNetwork... both are pretty expensive too but I think the speeds may be comparable or better than Verizon.

I use the verizon usb 3g air card and it works fairly well for just browsing the net. It is quite expensive being that you have a limit of 5gb a month for 60 bucks. There is a per mb charge if you go over the limit, I have never exceeded the limit but have come close. You will eat into that really quick downloading large files or streaming video.
I did try the Sprint 4g adapter with unlimited usage but even though my area was supposed to have good coverage it did not work very well.

 

Internet for a wireless provider is very expensive and some what limited. Some say that they are unlimited must most have a soft 5g cap. It really just depends on what you are doing. If you are just going to being doing tacomaworld, email, and web surfing you will probably be ok. I would try to avoid satellite at all costs. Because of the limitations of the technology Satellite has very bad latency, about 600ms round trip. This makes any kind of VoIP technology like Skype unusable and makes your internet experience very crappy. Most of the time the satellite service providers give you a modem that caches all your web pages so if there is a page you go to a lot it just looks it up on the modem instead of having to go out to the internet. DSL will be your best solution if you can get it. Let me know if you have any more questions I am a network engineer for a living so I have to deal with this crap all the time.

 

Yes, there may be a limitation on available field facilities but if you don't have someone else on a waiting list ahead of you, you may get lucky.

If the house you are moving to has DSL, you should be able to aquire the old owners facilities. It physical equipment needed doesn't follow the old user.

I would think so but when i called verizon and asked them they just told me there are no open ports (?) available I asked her shouldn't I just get the old owners line and she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about

 

Thanks, I don't think I will get hughesnet or wildblue etc, just read too many bad things about those kind of services along with your comments I guess my only other option is to go with earthlink and get a web accelerator.

Neither had I. You have to be "line of sight" pretty much with the tower (I get mine from a tower on Little Pisgah Mountain) but it is very fast. In fact, I think it may be the fastest method of transmitting internet. The company I get it from is called Skyrunner out of Asheville, NC. Skyrunner was the first company in the country to transmit internet broadband. Price is competitive with cable and DSL. Perfect transmission method for mountain top homes.

 

I just saw where virgin mobile offers unlimited usage of mifi for 40 bucks a month, that is cheaper than roadrunner that i have now has anyone used it? verizon charges 50 bucks for a limit of 5 gigs a month

Check for a wireless ISP in your area. In Washington state, we have an office getting around 10mbit.

Mobile broadband internet is pretty crappy... no matter which provider.
