you will get terrible mpg during the learning process. it's probably still running in open loop.

yes, open loop. default ecu settings for when the truck doesn't have enough data to run in closed loop. it is constantly learning values such as timing, shift points, etc., to try and obtain a perfect fuel/air ratio of 14.6. it uses data from the oxygen sensors to do this amongst other things. if you have an obd reader you can see this happen in real-time.

when you are in open loop it is ignoring all the data from the oxygen sensors.

I think my mpg was at its highest for the first 1k miles. It gradually got lower to where it is now. I lost about 1mpg.

Oxygen control loop should be active shortly after startup. If not it will display a check engine error light.

I have a 2016 access cab, TRD Off road 4x4, and located in San Diego as well. Purchased brand new and just turned 39k miles. My gas mileage, calculated by truck computer, is usually about 14 -16 mpg on highway and about 11 in town. To get anything close to 18+ on highway(4am trips to Los Angeles) I have to watch rpms and not speedo. If I purposefully hold just under 2000, I can get 18+. Can’t use cruise cuz when it hits kick down gear and rpms go up, forget it. It gets about the same mileage as my 2005 Jeep Wrangler 6 speed stick. I’m basing that on fill ups and same amount of trips. I got 19mpg ONCE on that trip and I was overjoyed! And again, the mpg numbers I’m giving are the average per trip, based on truck computer.

18 mpg is a pretty good average. I commute 50 miles to work with only about 5 miles of stop and go. I keep it under 70 mph and watch my rpm's. I have had 4 Toyotas and the only one that has ever averaged low to mid 20's is my wife's Rav 4. I couldn't get 20 mpg (Average) if I hyper milaged. Yeah I see that on the real time display but it never averages close to it. All I can say is I don't want to be stuck in traffic behind these claimed low 20's drivers ;-).

I disagree. I'm getting 13.5 around town which is near OP's numbers. Tank average is reset when you reset the Trip A and Trip B mileage (odometer push button) **I believe - I am looking into the documentation to support this claim, please correct me if this is false**. It is a rolling average and will be effected by...
    • When you fill up your tank (is it right before a lot of highway driving or right before a lot of city driving?)
    • Type of driving (city, highway, stop and go, lead foot drive it like you stole it, towing, etc.)
    • Distance driven
    • Temp + Humidity (air density)
    • Accessories
If you look at the pics I posted earlier my tank average was 13.5 because I had only driven around town (all city, no traffic, but a lot of traffic lights). I had just reset the tank mileage having filled up and all of my trips were short, less than five or ten minute stops to the gym, Costco, Cabellas, etc. My milage was shit...not because there is anything wrong with my Taco, it is because I am driving the taco in the conditions where it gets the shittiest mileage.

This weekend I went for a drive on the highway across the river to check out some of the historic homes in Council Bluffs, IA. I drove like I usually have for the past few tanks, ECT Pwr and S4 in town and S6 on the freeway so nothing changed with my driving habits but my tank average jumped up to 16.5 and was on an upward trend. Why? Did something magic suddenly happen? Nope. It was because the driving conditions changed (highway) which moved the average higher. I'm at half a tank right now, if I drive across the state on cruise doing 70-75 MPh I'm betting I can get that tank average to 21-22 Mp/G up from the 13.5 for the first quarter of a tank.

All of these "you are full of crap there is no way you are getting that low of mileage" posts are not taking into account OP is talking about the tank average displayed by the computer. If he filled up then sat in San Diego traffic for two hours on I-5 his mileage is going to be shit and the computer will be displaying accurate averages - its just because he isn't driving in conditions where he can leverage OD (6th gear).

I found that even on the highway 65 mph seams to be max where anything over and it starts to decline in the 70's. Toyota put al ot of time and research to publish there EPA ratings and you can bit they did them in idea conditions and everything else to fudge the numbers at there peak It only benefits them in sales etc. How people think they "average" more then what Toyota claims there max highway has me baffled.

it's because they don't. Tacaomas are not for fuel economy. V8 Full size trucks get pretty much the same MPG

Yea, I get anywhere between 13 and 17 (17 on a GREAT day). But 11.5 is still too low. He said it was his average of his current mileage overall and that it's always been that low. He is also NOT lifted, not on heavier tires, and zero mods. It doesn't take 1,000 miles to learn or for the truck to estimate. Even break in my truck got better numbers than that. My daily drive is all hills, backroads and it's almost worse than city sometimes. Lots of us have reported in the 13's, 15's and up. 11 is super low. Who knows, hopefully we'll get some answers eventually.

My friends Tundra averages 17mpg. My truck=15 to 16mpg. I have never seen anything above 17mpg, even on an 1600 mile all highway trip.
I usually drive my truck for 5-15 mile trips, so that's why my 15-16 is all I get.

Honestly I just don't get the obsession with monitoring MPG. I can understand getting a baseline so you have an idea of what you are getting, but for those who religiously keep track every tankful, why expend the time and energy? You're gonna pay for the gas regardless of whatever number your calculations come up with. Maybe its just because I'm toting around an extra 875 lbs in mod weight, know that my mpg is gonna be shit, and just don't care. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss :)

OP has 1,000 miles; I'd say he's currently obtaining his "baseline".

Which is fine but as you peruse through this thread, or any of the other hundred mpg threads, plenty of people out there who keep constant track of it throughout the life of their truck. I have always just scratched my head at it, but hey its a free country and people can do as they like.
