Who has driven a Taco Pro and a GX460?

Looking for comparisons between the two. I know the GX is basically a juiced 4Runner, but I am looking at the GX 460 Black Line in Nori Green since it looks like my Tacoma is getting pushed to 2023.

I just want to know if Tacoma drivers have had good or crap experiences with this similar but also very different vehicle.

Come on, a Land Cruiser vs an overpriced over hyped over marketed Tacoma?

Only thing to even consider there is if you need the pickup truck bed, otherwise Land Cruiser wins in *every* department.

 

Gx 460. Used one for a 2 week road trip. Amazing vehicle. Averaged 20mpg going 5k miles. Very comfy and we slept in the back of it some of the nights. Can’t think of a single bad thing about it. I’m still thinking of selling taco and getting the gx.
Go and test drive one. That v8 is amazing

 

I’d like to test drive one. They are trying to work a trade for a black line that is to be built in February.

I have a 4Runner with the 4.7 V8 and full time Four wheel drive with the same Torsen differential, and so I’m ASSuming they are very similar in torque and handling.

 

I don't think the 460 shares anything with the 4runner or Tacoma. They are not similar in really any way. Cross shopping a mid size pickup with few high end options and a large luxury SUV doesn't make much sense.

 

The GX and 4Runner are on the same chassis, and share suspension parts. A GX is basically a V8 4Runner/Prado

 

The only downside of buying one new is that they depreciate rapidly. You can get a low mileage CPO for a much more reasonable price. OTOH I understand that you can't take it with you.

The 460 and the Tacoma and 4Runner share more than you think. The LX 600 that has just come out is the one on a different platform, and the 2023 Tacoma and 4Runner are also moving to that same platform.

The 4Runner I have is on the Toyota 120 platform which is the same as the GX 470, FJ Cruiser, older Prado, and the 2nd Gen Taco.

 

Your V8 4runner is basically a GX470. So, the GX460 will be very similar. I believe the 4.6 has a bit more horsepower, and similar torque.

 

How does the Sequoia fit into this? I'm thinking that may be a better parallel

 

Exactly, if you do a lot of work on your own house a truck is essential. I probably save 1000's of dollars every year, some years 10's of thousands on home repair etc. but can't really think of any reason to have 6' foot of unused bed behind you if you are not going to use it regularly.

I have also done a lot of long trips in the truck to remote areas and I'm Ok with sleeping in the back but probably for most a SUV is better. You can't keep all dust out of the bed and also a couple of times I had guys approach my truck when parked in a remote area - they turned away when they saw me sit up in the bed but if they had not I cannot get to the drivers seat w/o getting out of the truck. Since then if I need some sleep on a highway I usually park near where the big rigs park to nap.

 

Sequoia is on the Tundra platform, but they are moving it to the universal platform that the new Tundra, current LX 600, and pretty much everything else. It’s a 2 year process I think to switch everything over. It could be more if they push the Taco and 4Runner to 2024.

It is hard to keep up with it all!

 

I recently bought 2022 Blackline Edition for my wife. I highly recommend it. It's a tough find. All the dealerships near me are sold out and won't accept an order. Even when you are able to find one, dealers will want to charge you more than MSRP. A couple of dealerships want to charge me $10K more than MSRP. You will want the 2022 model since it has the update interior.

 

Thanks Douglas! I see it has a pretty decent MSRP of $60k for the Black Line. But yeah…. $10k over that is too much. It looks cool and I’m glad they updated the interior for the last year or two of this generation. It looks great. But an up charge seems crazy considering how old this model is. I think it’s on year 9.

 

I just traded in my 2nd gen taco for a GX460 last week. It’s better in every way in my opinion, other than the price. but seriously if you are comparing TRD pro to gx the differences are a bit less as far as trim comparison goes. The V8 is velvety smooth. Not the most powerful v8 suv out there but 300hp compared to my taco at 240 feels like a rocket.

 

Never driven a Tacoma pro but own an Tacoma Off Road and a Blackline GX.
The GX is no doubt a smoother, quieter ride.
We use it as our family vehicle and my Tacoma is for daily use.
Very different in every way but an SUV could never replace a truck.

 

Don’t pay a dollar over MSRP on any vehicle.

 

Have had two of them in the past (leased for wife). My experience was that they were meh. Didn't seem to do anything particularly well, or poorly to write home about. Touchscreen is absolute trash, slowest response on any dash screen in any vehicle that I have ever owned (sucked in both we leased). At the end of the day we got rid of last one because she wanted something bigger, an Expedition. Which is being traded in on my Tacoma that I am waiting on.

 

Never owned an early version of the GX but the updated 2022 screen and infotainment respond extremely well.
The touch pad is also great if you do not want finger prints on the display.

 

Glad they updated that, was way too expensive of vehicles to have poor screens.
