@Finn-2187 I’m not an off-road expert by any means and this was definitely a lesson learned. Our initial plan was just just explore the Mammoth roads after Alabama Hills and head back for the day but obviously it didn’t work that way. A shovel would have probably made clearing snow a lot easier but we decided not to pack it this trip because snow wasn’t initially planned. We also didn’t pack snow bibs or snow boots for that same reason. Aside from not bringing those snow specific items which would have prevented us from having wet feet, a good map study would have probably helped us avoid this situation altogether. The snow was described as Mammoth Cement because it was a beast of its own. I’ve driven in deeper snow but it was powder so this was a whole new experience for me.

Here’s a pic of driving through powder for comparison. 2EBEE086-E425-48E2-81D7-090C6D2CCFBF.jpg

Snow wheeling takes a lot of experience to be able to "predict" what the conditions will be. The only way to get that experience is by going out and doing it. I've had days that are absolutely perfect and you just cruise right along. Then I've had days where I've been double locked bouncing off the rev limiter to go 100'. Then backing out and doing it all over again to go another 100'. This was on the same trail a week apart. lol

Not at all…they charge $300 per hour. The distance/terrain that they pulled us through landed me with a 2 hour charge plus whatever I tipped him. At that point the time that I saved by not being there overnight was well worth that and then some.

Not as bad as I thought I’m in that Mammoth/Bishop area solo a lot and was always concerned with recovery cost.. sorry you had to deal with that.. thanks for the reply!

Glad you made it out with just wet feet! I've seen things go from fun wheelin' to stuck and camping like that a few times. In the snow brings a whole new level of miserable when stranded though. I felt for ya! :mudding:
