Hey everybody, had a quick question about a check engine light that I've run into recently. I attached the message but it involves a malfunction with the electronic control in the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission. I had the truck for over a year with no issues and now the same problem has come up twice in three months after the last two services I've had with Toyota. The first time they blamed it on dust or bad gas and weren't able to find any issues and I didn't think much of it since I had been doing some off-roading in the middle of nowhere. This second time happened within two days after my 30K service and the truck hasn't had time to leave the pavement yet so I'm not sure what to think.

I never ran into this in the entirety of the 220K miles I put on my previous Tacoma so I was wondering if this was a common issue with the new models? The dust thing would really worry me as I live in the desert and there's a lot. Maybe the gas station I go to all the time just happens to get a bad batch right before my oil changes but that would be a pretty crazy coincidence. Especially since my ToyotaCare just ended and they've been really pushing buying that extended warranty.

I'm taking it in on Wednesday to be inspected and just wanted to double-check before they try to give me the same excuses. The first question on the phone while setting up the appointment was if I was sure I didn't put the wrong gas in it. You're telling me that green handle doesn't mean extra premium gas??? No wonder everyone was looking at me weird.

For the future is this something I can inspect on my own? It would be nice to be able to clear the light and get cruise control and stuff back and not have to deal with Toyota. Especially if they'll start charging once I hit 36K miles.

    Edit:
Pulled codes P117B00- Fuel Performance/Direct Injector
P017400- System Too Lean Bank 2

Nope, I've done the KDMAX tune but that was in-between the services so it wouldn't explain the first time it happened

any codes to report? I'd think the notice would have been prompted by a code - which may give you a better idea of the problem and solution.

The original message pretty much had zero information other than contact the dealer but I was able to go pull these.

Bank 2 is the Driver side. May want to check your emission system connections for loose wires (O 2 sensors) and gasket leak(s) at exhaust flanges. Possibly re-post thread with fault codes for others to chime in. Scary that the Green Handle did not sound the alarm of diesel fuel!

Thanks for the advice. I'll check on that stuff when it's light out. I can somewhat understand how someone might blank and put gas in a diesel but I'm not sure about the other way around. People always surprise me though.

Just a quick update. I found the problem and it was a missing oil cap. I have a feeling that was the issue the first time and they didn’t tell me but I called them out this time. I still think it seems like a ploy to get people worried and buy the extended warranty, especially with the vague message about the electronic controls going out but it is what it is. Thanks for all the responses.

What happened to your oil cap? Did the dealer leave it off when they did an oil change?

It would have been easy to spot that missing oil cap once you open the hood. Super shady as you said .

2020 SR5 4RUNNER throwing the same code. Just hit 38k so they had to inform me there may be costs. No mention that it was just in for inspection an oil at the end of October and has only been a mall crawler since just a few local miles. Waiting to see what the diagnosis is, see if they blame my obd2 plug for the dash cam or my accessorides remote start.
