I am in market for Tacoma 4wd. I understand that it is part-time 4wd. For those who live in wet part of the country, how is stability/traction on the highway or city streets in 2wd? Fish tailing? Chatter from the rear axle skipping? Does your VSC and/or traction control kick in a lot?

    Thanks in advance.

Unless you are drag racing, you should have plenty of traction on wet pavement. Snow and ice are a different story.

    Stock-ish
I'd say theres too many variables. A bone stock tacoma with nothing in the bed would be the most controlled example. When mine was stock, it did fine in Washington, just a little light in the rear so full throttle events would spin the tires/kick on traction control. It kicked on way way less than my gfs Fj Cruiser, which could just be related to tires and or weight/wheel base difference. Her traction control also seems 2x as sensitive compaired to my tacoma

Well if you're taking off and turning hitting the gas a little too much, yea it's gonna spin a little. Just the nature of a truck; it's light in the rear end.

i dont have an issue in most cases. the engine is restricted in the lower gear and speed from what i can tell. it helps the truck hook up in most scenarios but i dont like that "feature"

The only time I ever unintentionally broke traction in the rain was with my M/Ts. Stock tires or a good AT, you'll be fine unless trying to do some fun tricks.

Thanks guys! Most of the time, my bed will be unloaded in terms of weight.

My 2.7 L, 159hp, high torque, truck engine has trouble maintaining traction in wet conditions. A full gas tank and 100lb bed mat helps but I have to be very careful with throttle and clutch modulation to keep things from getting squirrelly.

Definitely need like 200 pounds in the bed when there is snow. I know this because of where I live haha. I have KO2’s on my truck and in two wheel drive I can still spin out from a complete stop (red light) if I punch it. Also on snowy days my tires can slip .. usually will do 4x4 those days

So, a Tacoma with V6 will be worst, no?

No. It isn't something to be concerned about at all. You can drive the truck entirely the same way when it's dry or wet outside if you aren't an asshole driver. Of all the things to be considering when purchasing a Tacoma this should be just about on the bottom of the list.

I recently went back to stock wheels/tires for a few weeks and the wet traction is fantastic. Coming from a 4Runner with full time 4WD I do miss that but it is totally fine. Just don't use 4HI on dry/wet pavement. Made me realize my KO2's with 48k miles have gotten really bad with wet traction now. Factory traction and stability control works fine. Much better then my old 4Runners.

As someone who lives on the WET coast of B.C. with 368 days of rain it seems at times. I can say that have never had any issue with traction from the rear unless I want it to happen. And even then the TCS is pretty good at controlling wheel spin events. It is a great vehicle in all weathers.

the traction control on these trucks are the best out of any vehicle i've owned. you really have to work to get those tires to spin with traction control on.

One clarification, traction control doesn’t do anything until a wheel starts to spin.

Zero issues with wheelspin in rain. Stock Toyo A20 tires are pretty lousy for hydroplaning but that's an easy fix.

Are you talking about wet pavement or snow/ice covered pavement?
