You’ll need at least 8 gauge but talk to the electrical contractor for the specific wire. Also you’ll need to dig the trench 2’ deep. Run the wire in the trench through gray pvc conduit. That is made for electrical applications.
I would ask the contractor why $1000 extra to run wire in a trench that is already dug for them. I would also get a second or third estimate.
When I was young (early 30’s), dumb and strong , I dug a 200’ trench to deliver electricity to my dad’s workshop. The soil was hard clay and I did it with a pickax and shovel. July in Lake County California over 100 degrees. I don’t know how I did it. It was back breaking work. Now I’m old, not so strong but hopefully a little brighter than than back then.

And like me....probably have a roasted back?!

I did shit like that, too. Most of it as some form of making money in my business and boy....4 surgeries later, I'm still paying the price!

Well, there's the National Electrical Code and the International Residential Code you need to follow. Would also be good to know how long the run is since there can be significant voltage drop at high currents over long runs.

Assuming not that long a run I'd recommend 1/0 wire (3 wires plus ground since 240v). Put it in conduit (CANTEX) that's rated for underground. Depth -- depends on your local codes, but typically a minimum of 18 inches.

How do I know -- BSEE and former professional home inspector in Texas.

Thank you for that, I get it. I have ridden motorcycles on the street longer than cars, lol. I'm also a cdl truck driver for a living. So I totally understand idiot drivers. One of the reasons I got this bike is because it is a bike and I don't have to ride it out in traffic. It's a class 2 ebike so I can even ride it on the sidewalks which is what most motorist prefer. But it's also OK to ride in the bike lanes or to the right of the road. I'll be careful and observant as always and I will wear a helmet since it's a little faster than most bicycles.

If your contractor is pulling a permit, be aware that your trench will need to be inspected as well. Even if he isn't pulling a permit, he may refuse to use your trench if not compliant. I would definitely use the approved conduit, and do the 100 amp service. Welders and compressors, electric car chargers, don't limit your service to save a few bucks now just because you don't at the moment have need for the added capability.

Oh, and yes, four or six gang outlets everywhere. No sense running power to a two gang and have to piggyback add-on outlets after the fact, which is sketchy at best and unsafe at worst.

Not enough information, but here goes. 100A. 4-wire (2 hots, neutral, ground) circuit would require #2 AL, or #3 CU., and a #6 CU or equiv. ground, providing your house service has enough unused capacity. Most home services cannot handle an extra 100A., since they aren't overbuilt originally. To find out, do the load calculations for your home as set forth in the current NEC. The easier way is to hire a licensed electrician. Make sure they get a permit and all the required inspections, so the project doesn't come back to bite you when you want to sell the house. Last but not least, talk to your insurance agent, bring your policy up to date.

    Evening all:
Was just watching a video of a plane trying to land at London's Heathrow airport, this could have ended badly!
There were high winds and it looked like it may flip over at one point as it touched down and then decided to make a go round and try again, in the meantime it appears that it grazed the runway with the fuselage as it aborted the landing and tried to take off again.
It's a good reminder as to why I don't like to fly!
I think this is the same airport where I saw only the runway, than only the sky several times as we were wobbling in for a landing, it was either Heathrow or Prestwick, I had posted about that.

. Good batch of Pappy's super secret chili ready to go for tomorrow! I like to line the top with pepperoni and let flavor soak down in. Going to be a good Wednesday. My Dad's 84 birthday!

How'd you know I was going to crock pot? I may not use that much though! Have to see what the victim...uh, wife thinks!

I watched Alaska Air make FIVE passes at a totally socked in Juneau back in my Field Service days. Juneau is a bowl if you don't know. I saw the side, the top, the bottom, and the other side come out of the fog. The fifth try was a stuck landing! All of us in the departure lounge gave a standing ovation. You should have seen those people coming down the jetway! White as sheets!

Then, we all got on. Coming back into the mainland, we hit turbulence that pushed me out of my seatbelt, and my head into the bulkhead! OW! Then I looked out the window, and the tip of the wing was above the top of the window! I closed the blind. There is a difference between knowing something is "supposed to do that", and wanting to see it!
