Just finished my first crankcase oil change our our 2016 V-6. I invested in the tool to remove the filter and for the most part everything went well.

My question for you guys here is this, do you fill you filter housing and filter with new engine oil before you install the new filter. I've always been of the opinion that the faster that filter area fills with oil the less time the engine runs without oil pressure upon start up. Just curious.

I will say this, I've been doing my own oil changes for several decades and between the skid pan and the whole filter changing process I've never had to work this hard changing engine oil on any vehicle I've ever owned. Add in the crazy and convoluted process needed to check automatic transmission fluid levels and it appears that Toyota has engineered and designed their vehicles to make dealers money. What should be two very easy and quick process's have evolved into jobs that many aren't equipped or able to do!

I never have...no issues. But I would wonder what the techs recommend...

I do not prime cartridge filters on any cars. There is residual oil in the engine. It can last a second it takes to prime the filter.

I used to prime the spin on filters, and I really do not see a difference in how cars run.

Funny you mention the Toyota engineers. You’ll find many members here use them as justification for what they do to their trucks and conveniently dismiss them when they don’t fit their narrative.

They will say…. What makes you think you are smarter than Toyota engineers when you suggest something but dismiss that narrative when they replace their tires before they wear, replace their wheels, upgrade headlights, complain about the coolant Y pipe, complain about the diff howl, complain about the gear hunting, complain about the leaking timing cover.

sorry, didn’t mean to hijack the thread. But you are correct. Great truck, just not perfect.

I have always primed my filters, I have yet to hear an argument against it that made any sense.

How do you prime an upside down cartridge filter? Oil does not spill?

No, been changing oil in my vehicles for 45 years and have never primed an oil filter. My '96 has 415,000 trouble-free miles on it and it's never had an engine cover removed.
So I'm pretty sure it has never been starved for oil due to not priming the oil filter.

415K is a heck of a lot of miles for that truck to be that clean. This man knows how to maintain a vehicle. Killer job!

Thanks, here's the inside. Been driven on road, off-road, Va to Fla many times, good weather, in snow. Been a GREAT truck, hope my 2018 TRD Sport holds up as well.

By and large, it takes a much longer time for the oil to fully drain out of the pan (to my satisfaction) than it does to worry about the skid or cartridge.

I’m convinced your ‘96 is as clean or cleaner than my ‘19 TRDOR. Just goes to show how far taking care of your stuff will go.

I always load the filter it can't hurt, and the more oil changes you preform the easier and quicker you get.

That’s the money shot. That picture alone is worth almost half a million miles….

Yep can't hurt, however it's messy enough changing the oil filer cartridge system, without have to pour oil into the housing.

I purchased one of these and it does cut down on the amount of oil spillage emptying the housing. I highly recommend it.
