Well, it happened. I wish there was a cool story from the trail, but nope. During a recent snowstorm, I spun out hard into a curb and gashed both of the passenger side rims. Only 10k miles on my 19 OR.

So far I've hit this a little with 80 grit sandpaper to start smoothing it out, but it's a pretty gnarly chunk of the rim that's gouged out.

Tacomaworld friends, help me feel better about this tragedy. :annoyed:

The first scratch is always the hardest. After that, the rest don't matter.

I'm 7500 miles in on the "dip" and it still looks good however, I just pulled those wheels off and put on some others. I used Black Magic No Scrub cleaner on the dipped wheels. It worked well. All I'd do different is maybe go a little heavier or 1-2 more coats on the less exposed surfaces. I have had it on my Ranger's wheels for over 3.5 years and it's still good. Recently, I just sprayed them with another coat to spruce them up.

The bonus....it comes off if you don't like it!

How much of a PITA is it to get tire off the wheel to dip it? I've honestly never attempted it myself.

    That's the "other" bonus...you don't!

You can tape off the tire around the rim if you desire but it's probably better if you don't. Just take yhe wheels off the truck and lay them flat for good access. Anything you spray on the tire will peel right off. It's a hoot! In fact, if you lay it on the rubber a little thicker than just over spray, it peels even easier.

I dug up a bunch of about 50 cent piece-sized fender washers to lay in each lug hole so when the lug nuts go back on, they don't twist and damage the coating and give it a place to start peeling prematurely. Concentrate on the hard to spray areas a bit more at first. That's where I'd put a bit more attention, as I said.

Clean the wheels well before spraying and after they were good and dry, hit them with 90% isopropyl alcohol. The beauty of the OEM wheels is they are coated and will clean up with a nice, smooth finish to paint on. This gives the finished product a nice, matted surface finish. If the offset of these wheels was closer to zero mm, I'd have kept them on. I think they look pretty danged good. I did dark gunmetal on the new ones because my chief complaint about all black wheels is when you step 10 yards away, you can no longer see any detail in the design. They all look like dark holes in the wheel wells. The dark gunmetal at least sheds a bit of detail and at least adds some design interest, IMO.

You're right about the dark gunmetal - looks awesome.

How'd you get the red Toyota logo on the old tires?

Don't stress it OP. I have worse gashes in my SCS Ray 10s. They would make the mall crawlers on here cry.

it's not actually dipped (if it's the product I'm thinking of) it's a rattlecan. just break the bead on the tire and tape it before pissin on the rim.

I'm with Jackie Moon. Kind of like scratching the boot strip on your boat. Plenty other things more important to lose sleep over.
