    Makes sense. I'm tempted to piece together my own air system rather than buy an ARB since I think it would be a good learning experience and I already have a compressor. Air solenoids that are rated for more than 100psi at constant use are initially appearing a tad difficult to find for not a zillion dollars

    ARB, and presumably others, makes a smaller pump that is used to only power air lockers. Maybe just plumb a pump straight to the locker, then use the 12v feed to the pump itself. No need for a solenoid that way.

    Because I’ve never had the pleasure of using them/trying to understand… can you put a 4x4 in 4wd without locking the hubs? Also can you lock the hubs without putting it in 4wd?

    I assume both lead to the same result (pointless without the other) but I’m trying to understand how they function at a somewhat high level.

    You can leave the manual front hubs locked and be in 2wd. It'll just spin the CV shafts from the hub side, and you'll lose a little MPG.

    If you had the hubs unlocked and put the t-case in 4hi/lo, it'd spin the CV shafts from the t-case side, but that movement wouldn't translate to the wheels since the locking hub, which is the interface, isn't meshed together.

    I’m not sure how a ball valve operates so I don’t really know. Is that just a simple on/off? But I do know the solenoid releases the pressure to the atmosphere when undone, which unlocks the locker. Would a ball valve accomplish that?


    Regarding locker on all the time, I do leave it on the whole time I’m off-road. It’s one less thing to think about and I’ll never have to deal with finicky actuation when I’m in the middle of an obstacle and realize an open diff won’t cut it.

    Ball valve would just be simple on/off. there's a ball inside that has a through hole down the center, so turning the inside ball 90° cuts off or allows flow. Would like manually turn a little lever under the hood or something. Was just a random thought that I figured I'd pose to the more experienced. I'll actually wire something up when I get there, because I want to learn more 12v stuff

    That’s what I thought it was. Then the question would be how would you exhaust that pressure into the atmosphere to unlock the locker? Unless you rigged up a little manifold with one ball valve going from compressor to locker and another one going from manifold to atmosphere.

    Honestly the arb is worth it, whenever you get to that point. Even the baby one for actuating lockers. The wiring is just so simple and integrated. Plus I know someone with the baby compressor that wants a single so I bet he would sell it cheap.

    Just put one of those pull ring pressure releases on a t-fitting between the locker side of the ball valve and locker. Shut ball valve, pull ring to vent.

    That said, the amount of plumbing is getting dangerously close to that of a full ARB air setup anyway, so just do it.

    Definitely always good to ask questions. Sort of inline with that you’re asking, powertank offers a pneumatic toggle switch for lockers, it’s pretty nifty. I ran my front locker off of my powertank for a little while. You just set the adjustable regulator on the tank for 90 psi.
