Are there any quick fixes for the stock remote starts failures? (shuts off when you open door and the super short time limit)
Should I get an after market remote starter or do they have the same problems?

No way around it shutting off with opening door. Toyota fail-safe.

What are you doing that ten minutes isn’t long enough? Or 20 if you start it a second time?

Those are intentional not failures. Just restart it again after the first ten if you need to. I wouldn't bother installing/messing with an aftermarket starter.

my 19 runs for 15 minutes, then I can restart it a second time for another 15. almost all asian auto's have the feature, if a door is opened, it shuts off. prevents your ignition for being over-ridden and your auto driven away. Ski

Some of the aftermarket are better. I have one of the old school (not PnP) Clifford/Viper systems in my 2nd gen and it does not shut off when you open the door. The alarm stays armed and the doors remain locked until you disarm with the fob. Then insert the key and turn to the "on" position and tap the brake to enter normal driving mode. The failsafe in this case is that if you fail to insert the correct key and turn it on, the engine will shut off when you touch the brakes. So thieves can't steal your truck. But these sort of systems are pretty involved to install.

The shutting off with the door is a push to start thing.

I'm using an N2Designs remote start on my "poverty" level trimmed Utility SR. Uses a standard key to start. Their remote system is all plug and play for my particular truck. Took about an hour to do. Truck doesn't shut off when the door is opened. Insert key turn to on tap the brake.

Interesting, but not sure why that would matter... seems like the same logic as mine could work with the push to start fob being present or not. Unless there is some issue I don't understand.

It's how Toyota does it. And I agree 100% it is unnecessary, could have easily been eliminated and the car would be just as theftproof without it. It really bothers me and not because of extra wear on the starter or anything. Only because its such a dumb design choice.

That would really bother me, too. I may be getting another Toyota in the next year or 2... maybe a Tundra, or maybe the next gen Tacoma if I like the redo. So maybe I'll have to learn to live with this at some point.

Seems like unnecessary extra wear on the starter motor etc no?

We’ve had some cold mornings the last few weeks and 10 minutes just doesn’t let the heat get up to temperature quite enough. Needs like 12 or 15. Starting it a second time remotely and then a third once I get in just seems like way more wear than necessary

Are we using the FORTIN modules that come with a lot of the aftermarket remote starters? Mine is from N2 which has the FORTIN module. If so,You can reprogram the time it runs for, if you have the Flashlink manager which is readily available and fairly cheap.

If you let it run for ten minutes you'll have full heat within a minute or two of driving depending on how cold you're talking. The truck will warm up a lot faster for you that way than letting it run for 20 minutes at idle. With no autostart I have heat blowing after about a mile of driving even when it gets down around 10F. Colder than that I walk my lazy ass out and start it myself and let it run while I grab my lunch and stuff from the house and it starts pumping heat in about the same distance.

I’m having an aftermarket installed next week and I was told it will still shut off when the door is open, no way around it.

My Ram was a push to start and would stay running, but apparently Toyota just doesn’t work that way.

I’m proceeding with the install anyway because I want something more reliable and with a longer range. Getting into a cold truck at -40 is never fun.

For 2020 and newer, Push-to-start button Toyota/Lexus models, there is NO way around the engine shut off when door opens.
Seems to be a Toyota thing, I know Honda remote start doesn't act like this.

Not even the N2Design module can bypass this "feature":
On N2 website for remote start kit
    Special Notes:
    • The engine will turn off when any door is opened
    • All Toyota/Lexus vehicles Push to Start ignition type - engine will shut down if any door, hood or hatch is opened.

I’ll be honest though, with the amount of people who try to steal cars around here in the winter, I’m fine with this minor inconvenience.

however, one thing I’ve noticed is if i don’t wait a few seconds to start my truck after the door opens, it won’t start at all. It will just turn over like it’s not getting fuel. Has anybody else noticed this?

Yup, I always press it and then press it again but hold it. Usually works.
