I have a Framed gravel bike (aluminum one) Love it. Seems really great for the price, haven’t had any issues with it all.

A friend of mine has one of their (non fat) mountain bikes, he likes it a lot.

Their fat bikes are also real popular around here for winter riding.

Speaking of gravel bikes, got the Poseidon Redwood delivered and built - installed the ride wrap today. Only thing left is to swap over the tires and go tubeless (have the WTB gravel/pavement tires in the background - went tan walls to accent the green bike). May hold off until I am closer to riding weather so the sealant doesn't sit for a couple months.

    Hey guys…
I registered for a 100 mile charity road ride today. Maybe that was a mistake! I’m pretty comfortable at 55 to 65 miles but 100 may be too much. But, it’s for a good cause.

If any of you are road cyclist and are in the Charlotte NC area and would care to participate let me know and I’ll drop a link to the registration. The ride is on 4/2/2022.

Hardtail is the answer. Had a fat bike, but its just not the same as regular MTB riding. If that's what you're searching for, then I think you'll be disappointed. Fat tires are almost like gravel bikes in that its still riding bikes, but its just different and its sort of a grind, if you know what I mean.

However, a short travel hard tail with 2.1 or 2.35 tires... Basically a gravel bike with more modern geometry, can be ridden over more technical stuff, and isn't a wanna beroad bike.

Exception to the rule: The Chamois Hagar

I don`t need or want a hard tail. I have a Polygon T7 that i really like for trails. I want a fat bike because they just look awesome and they`d let me keep going through the winter on groomed trails (although i rode the Polygon right thru December until we got some realy snow and ice build up so, realistically, it wouldn`t extend the season by much, but i`d rock the fat bike in the Spring/Fall mud and through the winter). A gravel bike would get me on longer rides and likely roads also. In my mind, i see less overlap between my Polygon and a gravel bike vs my Polygon and a fat bike. I just want a fat bike because they just look like a lot of fun!

I have to beg to differ just a bit. I thought that my hardtails were as close to a gravel bike as I needed to be, but once you've ridden a proper gravel bike with ~40c tires, it is hard to deny the extra efficiency and how much faster a gravel bike feels. Also, the pucker factor you can get from riding a gravel bike on green MTB trails produces the best giggles. It really depends what someone really expects from the bike and what they already own vs. trying to add to the fleet.

Fat bikes can be fun if you have the right conditions. Here on the CO front range, we so rarely have snow conditions that are fat bike optimal that I've sold the two that I've owned in the past after realizing that there's a fine line between "hey, my normal MTB would be good enough on this" and "these trails are too deep for any bike".

Same here. VERY dependent on good conditions, or its a exercise in self-hatred. We have a few good spots for it in UT, but its far enough drive that it's a "eh, maybe I won't" most of the time.

Thats really what it`d be like here. My normal MTB bike is fine for the majority of the winter, until the trailer get iced over then none of them are going to be really good. My inner child wznts the fat bike, i know its not practical.

Oh, a gravel bike for gravel is def the right tool. Efficiency is lightyears ahead. Right tool for the right job is just better. #shocker

    It's also a gravel bike. :D:boink:

And on top of the finite conditions that are good for fat biking, you have to be willing to ride in the cold when snow conditions are good. Once it gets warm enough to be generally comfortable, the snow is too soft and you're out of prime conditions.

I don't know if they're still doing it, but the Steamboat Springs ski resort used to build a snow dual slalom track on one of the bunny hills at the base of the mountain to run a MTB race once a year that was AWESOME on a fat bike when it was cold enough. The only problem is that they allowed regular mountain bikes into the race as well, which rutted up the track pretty badly after a number of runs and turned it overly sketchy since you'd be getting thrown from one rut to the other.
