Not real sure what the purpose of the ladder truck is squirting water here for, looks to me like it would make more sense to get it on the actual fire. I’m sure they have their reasons.

I'd ask where Robert's neck went but it looks like Michelle stole that, too.

It's possible they are using that truck as a remote monitor and have evacuated most people from the site as it's incredibly dangerous to be anywhere near it.

It looks like it's just flowing water and can definitely be ramped up if needed. The train tracks there prevent the truck from being closer on that side. What is in the building behind them may need protecting in the event things get worse and they can use that truck as a water wall.

It's raining here today, started last night. Don't know if that will help with the chemicals or hurt. I was reading about it on another news site and they were talking about that.

I fought a fire back in 2006 at an oil distribution place.. looking back it was definitely the biggest fire I have fought and clearly the most dangerous. If we had that fire today, there would be a LOT of things done differently. It took 14 fire departments ( including two Crash Trucks from two airports) and a couple million gallons of water to put out. At one point we were hauling water in cement trucks to the site.

    That's crazy!!!

Back when I was in the volunteer FD near the house we had a large structure fire in our town. This was back in the early 90's and since we didn't have forced water we had tanker trucks a long ways away hauling water, we pumped out of ponds and a large creek in town.

Fast forward to 2022, our little town still doesn't have forced water even though every town around us does.

The worst fire i remember was in Collingdale Pa I think it was 7 7000 gallon propane tanks all the could do was keep it from spreading to adjacent property

I cover 36 square miles and about 10% of my western edge has hydrants as it butts up against a city.. otherwise we are hauling water every where we go. Both my Engines have 1000 gallons and 1 tanker is 2000 , the other is 2300 and another 700 gallons between our grass fire trucks so we can hit with 7000 gallons to start. All structure fires are automatic mutual aid so more water is already coming.

A few years before I got out they bought a Peterbuilt cab and chassis with tandems on the back and had a tanker made. It was 3,000 gallons gravity dump out of a 12" X 12" square chute on both sides or the back with a switch controlled from the drivers seat. We didn't have a drop tank big enough to hold it so you couldn't dump the whole load at once. It was an awesome truck. Don't know if they still have it or not. It went every where for support before the other towns got forced water.

Hopefully that tank was baffled! There's still one or two trucks like that in the counties south of me.. great to have on scene with all the water but getting it there would be crazy since none of them have baffles in the tanks and most guys drive like idiots going to a working fire!

It did have baffles in it, I drove it quite a bit. It would get up and go when empty, not so much when loaded.

The assistant chief was showing someone about it one night in the station, had the key on and didn't know it but he opened the rear dump. It flooded the bay area before he could get it closed

Fertilizer plant fires are always bad news, even the rain can cause problems with them.

Back in my younger (dumber) days when I was fire fighting and playing police, I got to go to all the exciting stuff- fertilizer plant, oil/gasoline storage facility, chemical plant that made a component of rocket fuel, and a grain silo explosion at the state docks in Mobile, AL cause I was on a drill weekend for the reserves when that happened. Luckily the fertilizer and rocket fuel fires were small with no explosions.

At least we seem to have survived our younger dumber days with interesting lessons.

Those large dumps are no joke!

    Exactly!

And it's hard for the kids these days to listen.. probably like we didn't always listen to our elders!

Yeah, if I would have grown up with all this tech. I wouldn’t have made ‘er for sure but I did survive a ‘67Z28, ‘70Judge, L88 Chevelle etc. so I gave ‘er my best try. :)
